SparkFun Hosts Android Development Class with IOIO

Workshop will focus on using microcontroller to link Android devices to projects

BOULDER, Colo., June 27, 2012 – SparkFun Electronics (http://www.sparkfun.com), a provider of parts, knowledge and passion for electronics creation, today announced an upcoming class dedicated to teaching students how to use IOIO (pronounced “yo-yo”) to integrate an Android-based device into embedded electronics projects. The class, which will take place Saturday, June 30, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at SparkFun’s headquarters, is aimed at intermediate-level development users.

Until recently, it was difficult to connect low-level hardware (sensors, motors, etc.) to Android devices. The IOIO (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10748) is a microcontroller board that bridges this gap and allows users to create custom Android apps (specifically for Android 1.5 and later devices) that control external pieces of hardware. The board provides robust connectivity to an Android device via a USB or Bluetooth connection, and is fully controllable from within an Android application using a simple and intuitive Java API – so no embedded programming or external programmer is needed.

In this class, students will learn how to use their Android device to blink an LED, read a potentiometer, control a servo, and, if time permits, enjoy a stimulating open-ended session on connecting the Android device to a project that students bring with them to the workshop. The class will be led by Ytai Ben-Tsvi, the inventor of the IOIO, and is modeled after an MIT hack-a-thon Ytai taught in February of this year.

SparkFun engineers have also been working on an update for the IOIO. With the newest release of firmware 3.23, the IOIO’s features include (but are not limited to):

    • Bluetooth connectivity – The Android app communicates with the IOIO wirelessly. Instead of using a USB cable, you can use BT. The usage is simple plug and play, and no modifications to the code are needed.
    • USB OTG (On-The-Go) support – This is a new USB standard, which allows the IOIO to act as a USB host or device.
    • Open Accessory Support – This works with Google’s new USB protocol, Open Accessory. It allows the IOIO to initiate connections, which means users don’t have to mess with the USB debugging option on the Android.
    • Multi IOIO capability – Now, users can connect multiple IOIOs together through one app. Multiple IOIOs can perform different tasks, all communicating through a single app.

Space in the IOIO Development class is limited. To sign up or to read more about the course and its requirements, visit SparkFun. To learn more about SparkFun’s IOIO microcontroller board, see (http://www.sparkfun.com/news/789#projects). SparkFun has also compiled several free IOIO project tutorials for users to reference at http://www.sparkfun.com/news/789#projects.

FREEWAVE TECHNOLOGIES AND PAN-TECH PARTNER TO DEPLOY I/O EXPANSION MODULES FOR A MAJOR GAS PRODUCER IN BARNETT SHALE

FreeWave’s I/O Expansion Modules provide reduced RF congestion, less hardware and overall cost savings at multiple well pad sites

BOULDER, Colo., June 26, 2012 — FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, today announced that together with its partner, Pan-Tech Controls (http://www.pantechcontrols.com/), it has deployed hundreds of  I/O Expansion Modules for a major natural gas producer in the Barnett Shale in Texas, one of the largest producible reserves of any on-shore natural gas field in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnett_Shale). For Pan-Tech Controls and its customer, FreeWave’s I/O modules serve as remote I/O and control technology for tubing pressure, casing pressure, chemical tank levels and arrival sensors. The I/O Expansion Modules increase the degree of monitoring, control and optimization, and offer the most flexible and easily expandable wired and wireless I/O solution available in the market today.

“FreeWave has been our partner in the oil and gas industry for many years and, for this particular customer, we felt that I/O expansion was the best possible solution,” said David Savells, Upstream Oil and Gas Sales Lead at Pan-Tech Controls. “There were several hundred sites that required remote data monitoring and we already were facing high Radio Frequency (RF) noise congestion from existing equipment that was in place. With FreeWave’s newest line of I/O Expansion Modules, we were able to drastically minimize the number of base radios required by installing the Expansion Modules where more I/O points were needed at well head locations. The results were so impressive that the gas producer plans to continue adding I/O Expansion Modules as needed at sites with multiple wells.”

Deploying Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) at every well is quite costly. Pan-Tech’s customer had many locations with multiple wells at the same location. Coupling the flexibility of the remote I/O and the power of the PLC, the gas producer was able to maximize the utilization of the PLC and reduce costs by deploying FreeWave’s remote I/O modules at these multi-well sites. At the time, the gas producer already was using FreeWave’s HTplus backhaul radios and was familiar with the company’s offerings. With the help of Pan-Tech, the gas producer decided to give the I/O Expansion Modules a try at multiple well pad sites. The result not only minimized the amount of hardware used, but led to an overall cost savings and has been reliably delivering data since deployment.

FreeWave is the only wireless data radio provider with expandable I/O devices that offer universally configurable I/O channels for analog input/ output, digital input/ output and sensor power. The I/O Expansion Modules provide fast access times for up to 192 I/O points and distributes data points that can be connected by hard wire or wireless connections. They also offer internal user-selectable pull up and pull down resistors for all non-isolated inputs to ease product installation and reduce the number of external components. Additionally, the I/O Expansion products offer high accuracy analog inputs, configurable I/O points at each location and can interface to FreeWave radios or connect to any other serial communication device, thereby leveraging customers’ existing hardware investments. The flexibility of I/O Expansion allows it to be used for a variety of applications.

“Pan-Tech is a valued partner and its work in the oil and gas production industry is a great example of how our I/O Expansion Modules serve these critical applications,” said Ashish Sharma chief marketing officer at FreeWave Technologies, “Our I/O expansion technologies offer ease-of-use for extremely reliable data transmission alongside today’s advanced production techniques, such as multiple well pad sites and plunger lift. We also offer a three-year warranty on our I/O Expansion Modules, which is a testament to our customer focus and an integral part of the FreeWave difference.”

COLLABNET EMBEDS BLACK DUCK CODE SIGHT INTO TEAMFORGE TO DRIVE PRODUCTIVITY AND CODE REUSE ACROSS GIT AND SUBVERSION

CollabNet

Combined solution drives developer productivity, simplifies discovery and sharing of code and development artifacts across code repositories, clouds and locations

BRISBANE, Calif., June 25, 2012, CollabNet® (www.collab.net), a global leader for Enterprise Cloud Development and Agile ALM products and services, today announced it has embedded the Black Duck® Code Sight™ source code search engine into TeamForge®. Available in the new version of TeamForge that integrates Git and Subversion™ source code management (SCM) tools into a single platform, development teams now can discover and reuse code across repository boundaries. This dramatically boosts productivity for individual developers and global enterprise development organizations.

“Driving efficiency by giving developers a choice in the tools they use, and being able to reduce wasted time and re-work at the code level is vital to becoming a high-performing, agile software organization,” said Jim Ensell, chief marketing and strategy officer for CollabNet. “Embedding the Black Duck Code Sight code search engine, together with our combined offering of Git and Subversion, is a major benefit for organizations looking for a single SCM management and integration platform.”

Development organizations are under continued pressure to improve productivity and accelerate time-to-market, all while ensuring compliance. Code-reuse alone can make a significant improvement in achieving these goals. It is commonly accepted that projects created primarily from reused software take about one-fourth of the time and resources of those that are built from scratch. However, distributed code repositories and a lack of visibility into all available code assets hinder productivity improvements, particularly with Distributed Version Control Systems (DVCS) and the use of multiple, hybrid SCM tools.

Black Duck Code Sight is a scalable source code search engine that indexes code across an enterprise and version control systems to provide developers with fast, easy access and visibility into code resources. Deeply embedded within TeamForge through CollabNet Connect, the combined solution enables code review across multiple SCM systems, expands permission management and significantly increases code quality and efficiency. For developers, it speeds and simplifies code discovery and search, while advanced filtering improves productivity for both developers and the enterprise.

“More and more software organizations find themselves using a completely heterogeneous set of tools to manage the entire software development and deployment lifecycle,” said Dave Gruber, director of developer marketing for Black Duck Software. “For managing source code, Git and Subversion are commonly used in tandem, making the availability of Code Sight within the new release of TeamForge very powerful, as teams have both the choice of which system to use and the ability to search and re-use code within either repository.”
