DAIRYLAND POWER USES FREEWAVE TECHNOLOGIES WIRELESS DATA RADIOS FOR DISTRIBUTION AUTOMATION APPLICATIONS

FreeWave radios deployed in a large coverage area by electric power co-op

BOULDER, Colo., August 29, 2012 — FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, today announced that it has deployed wireless radios for La Crosse, Wisconsin-based Dairyland Power Cooperative (http://www.dairynet.com/), one of the area’s largest wholesale electric suppliers.  Dairyland uses FreeWave’s FGR-115 serial radios for a variety of distribution automation applications. It also uses FreeWave’s HTPlus radios for certain applications requiring more effective throughput. The cooperative serves more than 600,000 customers in a service area of 45,000 square miles.  Dairyland provides wholesale electricity to 25 member distribution cooperatives and 16 municipal utilities in four states (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois).

“FreeWave has been a trusted partner for several years and we continue to depend on its wireless data radio solutions for critical data transmission,”said Ken Graves, manager of telecommunications services at Dairyland Power. “Most of our customers live in rural communities.  Prior to using FreeWave radios, we researched a variety of potential vendors. It was essential to find a communication solution that was proven to transmit reliable data on a real-time basis, despite remote locations, a hilly landscape and steep terrain. Not only did FreeWave radios prove to have effective throughput, link performance and noise immunity, but they were easily integrated into our existing network. We are pleased with the radios we have deployed and are considering FreeWave for future wireless data radio needs.”

When Dairyland first implemented FreeWave radios it deployed a small installation base of FGR-115 radios. Based on the performance of the initial deployment, a decision was then made to expand the FreeWave radio network.  After a distribution automation study comparing various types of communication technology that faced harsh weather conditions and line-of-sight challenges from hilly terrain, the robust and reliable data transmission provided by FreeWave helped Dairyland Power make its decision to continue using the FGR-115 exclusively in its distribution network.  FreeWave solutions are currently being used for a variety of distribution automation applications including AMI backhaul, transmission capacitor bank control, transmission line sectionalizing, and fault detection and isolation.

The FGR-115 is an early version of FreeWave’s current product, the FGR2-CE. FreeWave’s products are 100 percent backwards compatible, making customers’ investments secure. The FGR-115 offers real-time remote diagnostics and setup, transparent to network communications and versatility – a single radio can operate simultaneously as a master, a slave and as a repeater.  The quality and versatility of the FGR-115 has led to its use in locations ranging from Mount Everest and Antarctica to the Amazon rainforest.  According to Graves, Dairyland has been especially pleased with the FGR-115’s link performance, single system integration and overall reliability.  The FreeWave HTPlus Ethernet radio is ideal for customers who need an industrial grade high-speed Ethernet radios that operate in harsh environments and noisy RF conditions.  It delivers data at a rate of up to 867 Kbps and is an ideal radio for SCADA backhaul networks.

“We are pleased to provide wireless data radio solutions to Dairyland Power Cooperative,” said Curt Goldman, market manager of utilities at FreeWave Technologies.  “FreeWave strives to provide the most trusted solution for distribution automation applications, and our entire team, from the engineers to the factory to customer support, works hard to ensure we are meeting all of our customer’s needs. We look forward to a continued partnership with Dairyland Power.”

ManageIQ Extends IT Cloud Management Capabilities Enabling IT-as-a-Service for Private, Public and Hybrid Clouds

EVM V5 Accelerates Hybrid Cloud Adoption with Unified Provisioning, Management and Automation Across Leading Private and Public Cloud Platforms

Mahwah, New Jersey—August 27, 2012 – ManageIQ (www.manageiq.com), a leader in enterprise cloud management, today announced EVM™ Version 5 (V5), providing unified cloud management that enables IT services to be easily provisioned and managed across physical, virtual, private and public cloud infrastructures, including Amazon and Rackspace. This new release builds on ManageIQ’s deep technical expertise and success helping enterprise IT organizations, including a growing number of Fortune 1000 customers, adopt and manage virtualized private clouds. By extending EVM management capabilities, including provisioning, resource management, monitoring, governance and compliance to public cloud platforms, ManageIQ provides an enterprise-grade, single platform to manage the migration and successful adoption of hybrid cloud computing.

“ManageIQ has been helping enterprise IT organizations successfully adopt cloud computing through a transformational approach that typically starts with moving from virtualization to private clouds,” said Joseph Fitzgerald, ManageIQ Chief Product Officer. “We see our customers evolving their cloud strategies to include public clouds, so we have extended EVM to manage both private and public clouds in an integrated, hybrid fashion – addressing the needs of cloud management in the enterprise.”

Effective delivery and management of IT services across hybrid clouds requires real-time management and automation capabilities that are “unified by design” – not loosely coupled, point-tool integrations that leave visibility, governance and automation gaps. ManageIQ uniquely addresses these requirements architecturally, through an Adaptive Management Platform™ that enables continuous closed-loop management, tightly coupling provisioning together with configuration, resource and workload automation. Its industry-leading EVM Suite now supports hybrid cloud infrastructures with unified monitoring, management and automation, giving IT organizations operational visibility and control through a single pane of glass. EVM delivers user self-service provisioning and management uniformly and transparently across hypervisors and cloud providers, enabling optimal service delivery based on business policies, service levels and cost.

“EVM enables us to be more agile by delivering cloud-based services to our test and development teams across three continents,” said Simon Pole, Development Infrastructure Manager for Pitney Bowes Software. “Our users go to the EVM portal, select the services they need, and provision them in minutes rather than in days. The EVM self-service portal lets users  control and operate their services independently within our IT governance model. This enables us to deliver high quality services to our users in a very cost effective way.”

“To fully realize the benefits of virtualization and cloud, IT management teams need integrated systems management solutions that can dynamically optimize application performance and resource utilization across a range of virtual and physical platforms including hybrid private and public clouds,” said Mary Johnston Turner, Research Vice President, IDC Enterprise Systems Management Software. “Effective hybrid cloud management solutions need to do more than simply enable self-service provisioning.  They need to provide real time, policy-based control across multi-tier applications and diverse infrastructure resources, in order to keep business requirements and IT utilization continuously aligned.”

Highlights of EVM Version 5

EVM V5’s unified self-service provisioning, monitoring, metering/chargeback, adaptive automation and policy-based orchestration with role-based executive, operational and user dashboards has been extended beyond physical and virtual infrastructures to public and hybrid clouds, including:

Public cloud support for Amazon (AWS and CloudWatch).

OpenStack support for both public cloud providers such as Rackspace, and for private clouds, as well as VMware vCloud support delivered in 4Q2012.

Support for a broad range of IT services from simple, single systems to complex n-tier systems delivered from a self-service portal as well as through other enterprise service catalogs and portals.

Powerful service orchestration capabilities for requesting, configuring and managing services, as well as holistic visibility and policy-based control over services including power operations, flexing and monitoring.

EVM V5’s out-of-the-box integration with other enterprise management systems maximizes operational efficiencies and leverages existing IT investments across hybrid clouds, including:

Service automation for provisioning, flexing and decommissioning, driven via change management systems and enterprise service catalogs, as well as IT Process and orchestration tools.

Service monitoring with policy-based incident and alert creation, containing comprehensive contextual information to reduce mean-time-to-repair.

Real time discovery and monitoring capabilities that ensure CMDBs are kept accurate and up-to-date.

Usage and metering information can be federated into financial management systems for billing and chargeback.

Supported integrations include ServiceNow, CA, Microsoft Systems Center, BMC, HP, F5 and NetApp, as well as RESTful and SOAP-based management web-services.

Availability
EVM V5 will be Generally Available September 30, 2012.
