As Agile and DevOps movements mature so too does cloud development
BRISBANE, Calif., Dec. 19, 2011, CollabNet® (www.collab.net), the global leader for cloud development and Agile ALM products and services, expects the adoption of cloud development practices to increase in 2012 as a growing number of IT organizations build and deploy software directly in the cloud. During 2011, CollabNet saw a 40 percent increase in cloud development projects developed, deployed and hosted on its private and public cloud offerings, with more than 1,500 new customers adopting its Codesion™ cloud development platform over the past 12 months.
“The software development industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace, and we see the convergence of Agile ALM, Continuous Delivery and hybrid cloud strategies making enterprise-wide cloud development practices increasingly attractive to IT organizations,” said Bill Portelli, CEO and co-founder of CollabNet. “In this context, ‘enterprise’ applies to the compliance, traceability and security standards that software-driven organizations require from the cloud to increase productivity, global collaboration and the pace of releasing quality software .”
From an industry perspective, CollabNet cites the following factors that are leading to enterprise cloud development as the next wave in software development: 1) maturing cloud development platforms that provide enterprise-grade security and regulatory compliance, 2) the ability to integrate commercial and open source ALM tools in the cloud, 3) the increase in Continuous Delivery in the cloud, and 4) the mainstream adoption of hybrid computing strategies that blend public and private cloud platforms based on application type and usage requirements.
CollabNet is well-suited to gauge the increased adoption of cloud development practices. The company maintains six world-class data centers that provide up to 99.99 percent average availability and stringent security controls for more than 1.5 petabytes of annual data traffic and 3.5 billion Subversion transactions per year. It maintains a highly trained operations team for managing large enterprise ALM sites, managing more than 10 terabytes of data annually and 1.6 million Subversion transactions per day for more than 25,000 users. It hosts approximately 800,000 documents and 350,000 artifacts for more than 5,000 projects using 7,000 trackers.
“We see enterprise cloud development as a growing movement in the software development industry and the result of two megatrends in IT – cloud computing and Agile ALM,” said Guy Marion, vice president of cloud services for CollabNet. “Just as Agile processes are scaling across IT organizations, cloud development is moving from smaller projects to more strategic implementations that larger IT organizations are using to adopt and scale software development and deployment directly in the cloud.”
CollabNet enables hybrid cloud development strategies with a portfolio of products and services that provide the performance, security and traceability today’s maturing Agile-based environments require. CollabNet’s cloud platforms meet enterprise needs and empowers thousands of developers to streamline the development and deployment process using a growing ecosystem of hosted open source and commercial tools, including Apache Subversion®, Git, Trac, Bugzilla, CollabNet’s Agile ALM platform TeamForge®, and other leading Agile project management tools.

The only utility power company in Mexico uses FreeWave wireless data radios for monitoring and control of critical electric power applications
BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 14, 2011 — FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, was chosen by Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) (http://www.cfe.gob.mx) for wireless data radio applications such as power consumption and substation monitoring, as well as control and monitoring of power networks.
CFE is the only electric power utility company in México. It generates, transmits and distributes power and energy to nearly 100 million customers and is one of the largest utility organizations in the world with approximately 100,000 employees around the country. It currently is using FreeWave’s FGR2-PE, FGR115-RC and HTPlus wireless data radios in nine of the 16 divisions throughout Mexico.
“Before implementing FreeWave radios, CFE was experiencing difficulties due to distance and maintaining line of site in its communication networks,” said Federico Ibarra Otero, engineer at Ampere, FreeWave’s reseller partner in Mexico. “There were some locations where the monitoring devices were remotely located and required repeaters. FreeWave offered a solution that tackled both the distance and line of sight issues and we have achieved more consistent, reliable and modern links since implementation.”
FreeWave radios are used for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) applications to monitor and control switch gears, reclosers and power meters. Some of the networks are installed in heavily populated cities, such as Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara, where the RF noise and line of sight can potentially cause major issues with wireless communications. However, with FreeWave’s excellent network design and flexibility, the radios achieve optimal communication, even with skyscrapers, tree coverage and high RF noise levels. With CFE being the only energy provider of power for the entire country, FreeWave radios also were relied upon for data transmission in a wide range of geographical areas, spanning from the big cities to remote locations in the mountains and desert. Additionally, each FreeWave radio is 100 percent tested for RF performance — from -40° C to +75° C — to ensure reliability in a variety of weather conditions.
“We are very satisfied with FreeWave’s Ethernet models, the FGR2-PE and HTPlus, as they let us manage serial and Ethernet devices at the same time,” said Mario Granados Villareal, engineer at CFE. “This allows us to incorporate all the data coming from the radios to the LAN networks, which not only saves time, but allows our entire communications network to operate seamlessly.”
The FGR2-PE offers users a second, switched Ethernet port as well as two serial ports that give customers the ability to transition from serial to Ethernet data communication without having to replace their wireless communication hardware down the road, as well as operate both serial and Ethernet communication independently and simultaneously on the same platform. The FreeWave HTPlus Ethernet radio is ideal for customers who need an industrial grade high-speed Ethernet radio that operates in harsh environments and noisy RF conditions. It delivers data at a rate of up to 867 Kbps and is an ideal radio for SCADA backhaul networks.
“We are proud to have been chosen by CFE for this significant project. The success with CFE confirms that our wireless solutions are making progress across the globe in the smart grid market,” said Ashish Sharma, chief marketing officer at FreeWave Technologies. “Our industrial radios provide enhanced capabilities for smart grid applications, such as distribution automation (DA), AMI back haul, distribution management (DMS), substation automation (SSA), load management (LM), demand response (DR), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and energy management (EMS). Our feature rich radio solutions coupled with top-notch customer support will bring new efficiencies to CFE’s network.”

Latest version incorporates new UIWebView support and recorded speed playback features for iOS devices
BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 5, 2011 – Gorilla Logic, (www.gorillalogic.com), a leader in enterprise application development services and creators of open source test tools for mobile and Rich Internet Applications (RIA), today announced the latest version of FoneMonkey for iOS, the popular open source functional testing tool for iPhone and iPad applications.
“This most recent release of FoneMonkey for iOS adds several key enhancements based on requests from the open source community of iOS developers,” explained Stu Stern, CEO and president of Gorilla Logic. “We are committed to meeting the needs of the open source community through frequent updates to FoneMonkey for iOS to provide developers and QA team members with rich features that help them ensure their testing is completed faster and with more accuracy.”
Features added to the newest version of FoneMonkey for iOS make it easier for developers and QA team members to conduct automated testing of their iOS applications. These features include:
• A new capability to run HTML Selenese scripts within a UIWebView – enabling Selenium testing of embedded web apps for the very first time
• An option to playback scripts at recorded speed which increases productivity of developers
• Console options to set playback speed/timeout from the console, allowing users to the option to set faster playback speeds when they do not need to see steps during playback or slower playback speeds if they want to watch and inspect each step during playback
• Commands retry until timeout so the WaitFor command no longer is necessary when waiting for data
Stern says now testers with no Objective-C knowledge can use JavaScript as an alternative to extend FoneMonkey-generated tests. This allows them to easily create tests and suites of tests in Javascript. In addition, data driving capabilities allow developers to create CSV databases to drive tests with unique data per each test. This allows users to create one test that can be run many times using different data to help them see how an application responds using multiple data sets. Finally, this latest version supports Selenese HTML scripts which enables developers not only to test native functionality of their applications, but also the parts implemented in UIWebViews, adding more test support for those who use web technologies in their applications.
Gorilla Logic’s passion for delivering quality software applications for enterprise customers led to the creation of FoneMonkey. It is the only test tool for iOS and, most recently, Android, that records all actions on an iPhone, iPad or Android phone while in use and plays them back as a test script at any time. It enables the interactive creation, editing and playback of automation scripts that exercise an application’s user interface. Using FoneMonkey, developers and quality assurance team members can create suites of tests that automate and perform user operation sequences, and then verify results. FoneMonkey supports development as well as QA testing, and tests can easily be incorporated into continuous integration environments.
