GORILLA LOGIC RELEASES MONKEYTALK FOR CROSS-PLATFORM IOS, ANDROID FUNCTIONAL TESTING

New Open Source Testing Platform Helps Streamline the Delivery of Quality Mobile Applications

BOULDER, Colo., March 6, 2012 – Gorilla Logic, (www.gorillalogic.com), the leader in enterprise application development and automated mobile testing tools and services, today announced the availability of MonkeyTalk, a new cross-platform iOS/Android functional record/playback functional testing platform that unites the industry leading FoneMonkey for iOS and FoneMonkey for Android open source tools. MonkeyTalk provides a single, powerful, cross-platform testing environment that helps development teams speed the delivery of higher quality mobile applications. The power of MonkeyTalk is multiplied by Gorilla Logic’s new Continuous QA in the Cloud service offering (see today’s announcement entitled, “Gorilla Logic Announces New Cloud-based Quality as a Service (QaaS) Offering.”

“Mobile application testing services are poised for enormous growth in 2012 with U.S. companies rapidly accelerating their demand for the use of third-party mobile application testing tools and services,” said Rona Shuchat, program director at IDC. “With Gorilla Logic’s new Continuous QA Cloud offering, QA professionals can effectively and efficiently automate the testing of mobile apps across multiple devices and simulators (in any combinations) to meet the increasing demand for highly usable and high performing mobile apps.”

For the first time, QA professionals have a comprehensive solution for mobile application testing. MonkeyTalk fills a huge void in the application development/delivery toolkit by recording, playing back and validating any user interaction on any mobile device or tablet. MonkeyTalk handles any gesture on any component, and supports both iOS and Android, simulators or devices.

As part of MonkeyTalk platform, Gorilla Logic has introduced the MonkeyTalk Command Language, a simple, but powerful, keyword- and data-driven language for specifying functional test scripts. Designed for QA professionals, MonkeyTalk Command Language is intuitive, readable and easy-to-learn. MonkeyTalk can be generated automatically through recording or composed from scratch with the MonkeyTalk IDE or with any text editor. In addition, testers and QA professionals can extend MonkeyTalk with their own application-specific commands without any programming. MonkeyTalk’s JavaScript API also allows tests to freely mix JavaScript and MonkeyTalk for enhanced control.

“We’ve immersed ourselves in the functional testing tools space for four years with thousands of teams using FlexMonkey and FoneMonkey, so we were able to step back and redesign with a focus on how people work in the real world,” said Edward Schwarz, vice president of engineering and co-founder of Gorilla Logic. “The MonkeyTalk command language as well as comprehensive support for JavaScript-based test scripting are examples of listening to QA pros talk about what they need to really drive value.”

 Key features of MonkeyTalk include:

  • Powerful data-driven functional testing for iOS and Android
  • Recording and playback of user interface interactions
  • Verifying expected versus actual results
  • Generating readable, maintainable scripts, as well as supporting easy creation of scripts from scratch
  • Automatically converting scripts to JavaScript which can be extended with custom logic

GORILLA LOGIC ANNOUNCES NEWEST VERSION OF FONEMONKEY AUTOMATED TESTING TOOL FOR IPHONE AND IPAD APPLICATIONS

Latest version incorporates new UIWebView support and recorded speed playback features for iOS devices

BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 5, 2011 – Gorilla Logic, (www.gorillalogic.com), a leader in enterprise application development services and creators of open source test tools for mobile and Rich Internet Applications (RIA), today announced the latest version of FoneMonkey for iOS, the popular open source functional testing tool for iPhone and iPad applications.

“This most recent release of FoneMonkey for iOS adds several key enhancements based on requests from the open source community of iOS developers,” explained Stu Stern, CEO and president of Gorilla Logic. “We are committed to meeting the needs of the open source community through frequent updates to FoneMonkey for iOS to provide developers and QA team members with rich features that help them ensure their testing is completed faster and with more accuracy.”

Features added to the newest version of FoneMonkey for iOS make it easier for developers and QA team members to conduct automated testing of their iOS applications. These features include:

• A new capability to run HTML Selenese scripts within a UIWebView – enabling Selenium testing of embedded web apps for the very first time

• An option to playback scripts at recorded speed which increases productivity of developers

• Console options to set playback speed/timeout from the console, allowing users to the option to set faster playback speeds when they do not need to see steps during playback or slower playback speeds if they want to watch and inspect each step during playback

• Commands retry until timeout so the WaitFor command no longer is necessary when waiting for data

Stern says now testers with no Objective-C knowledge can use JavaScript as an alternative to extend FoneMonkey-generated tests. This allows them to easily create tests and suites of tests in Javascript. In addition, data driving capabilities allow developers to create CSV databases to drive tests with unique data per each test. This allows users to create one test that can be run many times using different data to help them see how an application responds using multiple data sets. Finally, this latest version supports Selenese HTML scripts which enables developers not only to test native functionality of their applications, but also the parts implemented in UIWebViews, adding more test support for those who use web technologies in their applications.

Gorilla Logic’s passion for delivering quality software applications for enterprise customers led to the creation of FoneMonkey. It is the only test tool for iOS and, most recently, Android, that records all actions on an iPhone, iPad or Android phone while in use and plays them back as a test script at any time. It enables the interactive creation, editing and playback of automation scripts that exercise an application’s user interface. Using FoneMonkey, developers and quality assurance team members can create suites of tests that automate and perform user operation sequences, and then verify results. FoneMonkey supports development as well as QA testing, and tests can easily be incorporated into continuous integration environments.

FoneMonkey 5: Open Source Testing Tool for iPhone, iPad – Mobile App Testing

FoneMonkey 5: Open Source Testing Tool for iPhone, iPad

Posted on 04/04/2011 in iPhone App Testing, Mobile App Development, Mobile App Testing by Mike Brown

If you had to pick two words typically NOT associated with testing iPhone and iPad apps, “automation” and “agile” would be near the top of the list . As of today, that no longer applies, as Gorilla Logic released FoneMonkey 5, the latest version of their open-source functional testing tool for the iPhone and iPad platforms.

The tool is sure to become a go-to among iOS developers, as no other mobile testing product offers a comprable suite of features. In fact, FoneMoneky 5 is currently the only tool for iOS that records all actions with the iPhone or iPad (while in use) and plays them back as a test script at any time. Even better, the tools enables interactive creation, editing and playback of automation scripts that exercise an application’s user interface.

Essentially, what this means is that developers and testers can now create suites of tests that automate and perform user operation sequences, and then verify results. A game-changer in the testing space, no doubt about it. Oh, and did I mention that it works on both simulators and real devices?

You can watch a video demo of the product here.

Gorilla Logic’s FoneMonkey Test Tool for iOS – Dr. Dobbs Journal

Gorilla Logic’s FoneMonkey Test Tool for iOS

By Adrian Bridgwater, April 04, 2011

Developer option to create ‘suites of tests’ that automate user operation sequences

Open source test tool company Gorilla Logic is aiming to extend its reach in mobile and rich Internet applications (RIA) development with FoneMonkey 5, the latest version of its open source functional testing tool for iPhone and iPad applications. The rationale for a new version release is an additional function that automates the detection of bugs prior to release. The product is also singled out for its ability to work as the only test tool for iOS that records all user actions and plays them back.

After recording user actions with the iPhone or iPad while in use, FoneMonkey works by playing them back as a test script at any time. It enables the interactive creation, editing, and playback of automation scripts that exercise an application’s user interface. Using this tool, developers and quality assurance team members can create ‘suites of tests’ that automate and perform user operation sequences and then verify results. Gorilla Logic says that FoneMonkey supports development as well as QA testing — and tests can easily be incorporated into continuous integration environments.

“FoneMonkey fills a gap in the iPhone/iPad developer’s toolkit and makes Agile development a reality through automated testing, something that has never been feasible for this critical consumer platform with millions of users worldwide,” said Stu Stern, president and CEO of Gorilla Logic and cocreator of FoneMonkey. “FoneMonkey is a single tool that can be used effectively by both engineering and QA organizations, from one-person startups to large enterprises.”
