Oil and gas industry manager to discuss spread spectrum wireless radio technology at 2011 event

Jim Gardner is a seasoned industry veteran in SCADA and data collection technologies and the oil and gas industry manager at FreeWave Technologies, Inc. Gardner has worked in the oil and gas industry since 1975 in various management positions, including as Regional Manager, AMF Tuboscope; as senior vice president and general manager at PRS; as senior vice president and general manager at Remote Operating Systems (ROS); and, as product manager at ABB Totalflow. He joined FreeWave in 2001 as an oil and gas sales manager responsible for launching the company's products into the oil and gas industry. He currently is a member of ENTELEC, ASGMT and ISHM.

WHAT: Hands-on Class: Spread Spectrum Wireless Radio Technology

Gardner will lead a hands-on class on how to set up serial networks using wireless spread spectrum radios. The in-depth demonstration will show participants how they can use spread spectrum radios to incorporate wireless communications radios in a wide variety of applications. Participants will have the chance to configure, test and actually use the radios in a networked configuration as part of their in-class experience.

WHAT: "The Evolution of Data Collection for Gas Measurement"

Evolving communication technologies are revolutionizing SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems just as new technology in drilling and production are revolutionizing the way oil and gas wells are produced. In today's oil and gas environment, production volumes are many times greater than they were just 10 years ago. The price of these natural resources is down significantly from where it was in 2008 so, for producers, it has become increasingly more important to run more cost-effective operations.

Today, more pre-planning and system design are necessary to build an expandable, scalable communications network. These systems are much more complex than the older systems but provide far greater versatility and are far more robust than the systems built 10 or 15 years ago.

In our evolving world of oil and gas production, more data is being requested more often. Almost continuous polling and higher transmission speeds are requiring communications systems to evolve from a single network solution into multiple networks, each of these networks provides layers of communication. This hands-on workshop will show attendees how new spread spectrum technologies give users the ability to connect instrumentation in the field without the need for costly wired infrastructure. Attendees will benefit from this presentation by acquiring the information necessary to make wireless IO business decisions.

"Wireless Communication to a Plunger Lift Well"

Traditionally, an operator was required to manually shut in the well to create pressure downhole in wells that suffered from heavy fluid loads. Artificial lift is a method used to build enough downhole pressure to lift or produce the liquid from the well. With options for communicating plunger lift data to the RTU being wired or wireless, producers have a decision to consider. To support producers' plunger lift control objectives, automation electronics manufacturers have been focusing a great deal of their development efforts on the plunger lift control applications. Today, these technologies can be supported at the site with either wired or wireless solutions. This presentation will discuss wireless as an alternative to wired solutions. It presents some of the capabilities of wireless that are on par with wired and some that are superior. Also presented is a simple set of economic inputs that can be used as guidelines for making the choice between wired and wireless options.
