Version 3.0 of the JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server adds support for JMS Map Messages

The JNBridge JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server V3.0 adds support for JMS Map Messages, automatically converting received map messages to XML documents based on user provided schemas. The JNBridge JMS Adapter for .NET adds full support for Visual Studio 2010 and Microsoft Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) Line-of-Business (LOB) SDK. Both adapters also have expanded licensing options, including support for virtual machines and annual licensing.

"Giving actuaries working in local markets access to key functions from their VBA/.NET environments has changed the way they develop applications," said Johannes M. Hug, Ph.D. director of information technology at Swiss Re. "Without the need to reinvent critical code, they now can focus on integrating local market conditions for even more accurate analysis."

Insurance underwriting relies on complex analysis to make critical business decisions - including reviewing financials, valuing potential losses and mitigating risk. At Swiss Re, these analyses are performed by actuaries who chart and analyze probabilistic data using a proprietary library containing hundreds of classes of numerical and business functions that capture reinsurance knowledge and perform key computations.

Prior to seeking out JNBridgePro, Swiss Re had spent considerable resources in developing the Swiss Re Actuarial Library (SAL), its proprietary Java-based API that contains rich numerical analysis functionality. SAL is readily available to actuaries working on corporate enterprise applications at the home office but it was not accessible to actuaries in local markets thus resulting in actuaries continuing to reinvent the wheel by writing their own logic, investing time and effort to create and test more limited function sets.

"A great deal of business knowledge is embedded in the API - cost models, internal overhead and profit margin calculations and critical numerical and business functionality - content local users might not think to create," said Thomas Kruppa, director of products at Swiss Re. "Yet the API cannot address every market or rapidly changing local conditions. Local markets have unique characteristics that our Java-based enterprise library does not address. That is why many of Swiss Re's actuaries develop standalone Microsoft Excel applications that are tailored to local markets."

What: Java/.NET Interoperability in the Cloud

Cloud computing is without question here to stay. However, how do IT organizations moving applications to the cloud integrate Java and Microsoft .NET applications? At the GLUE Conference, Citrin will outline the level of support and various approaches developers can take to call Java from .NET in the cloud. Citrin will explain why he believes that what is typically discussed under the rubric of cloud interoperability is so insufficient it will destroy the promise of the cloud. For cloud computing to be successful 'Cloud Interoperability' must encompass full Cloud-to-Cloud access, whereby any cloud service can be consumed from any client or on-premise platform, and full interoperability within a cloud service. What: Java and the Azure Cloud
Microsoft has been promoting the use of Java in the Azure cloud, with the recent launch of "Windows Azure Starter Kit for Java." (http://preview.tinyurl.com/4hz2rp7). The intent of the new offering is to provide developers with tools for packaging and uploading Java-based web applications running on Tomcat or Jetty. However, the use cases for this offering are not realistic and, in some instances, "just don't work." The problem is that these examples are extremely constrained. While it may be possible to construct Java EE examples that work as demos, it is unlikely that any real Java EE apps, web-enabled or otherwise, can be migrated to the Azure cloud without drastic, impractical or even impossible, modifications to the underlying application servers in order to accommodate the networking issues.

Beyond technical issues in getting an app server to run on the Azure platform, developers need to ask why they would want to do this on a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), such as Azure, when it would be far simpler to run such an application on an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offering such as Amazon EC2. It is one thing to say it can be done; it's another to actually want to do it, as opposed to the easier alternatives. The market seems to bear this out - a recent Forrester study shows that Eclipse (that is, Java) developers prefer Amazon EC2 or Google App Engine, while Visual Studio developers prefer Windows Azure.

Users will want to do things with Java on Azure, but not what the creators of the Azure Starter Kit for Java think they want to do. Rather than running a self-contained Java server in an Azure role, they will want to integrate their Java with the .NET code more directly supported by Azure.

How: The industry needs interoperability solutions for IT organizations that need to integrate Java and Microsoft .NET applications running in the Cloud - especially as a high-performance alternative to existing web services protocols. Citrin outlines the level of support and approaches developers can take to call Java from .NET in the cloud.

WHAT: ISVs and the Cloud

If you ask most people how software vendors can move into the cloud, they will say that the vendor should take their traditional products, put them in the cloud, and offer them as services. But what about other software vendors who create components that other developers incorporate into their own programs? In most cases, offering the component as a service doesn't make sense.

The main challenge to running components in Cloud-based programs has to do with essential issues, like licensing and billing. Windows Azure has absolutely no provision for third-party licensing and billing. It's a chicken-and-egg problem. If Microsoft is serious about its software partners producing for Azure (and not just end-user customers creating custom applications), Microsoft will have to jump-start the market by offering their own billing mechanism.
One would think that barriers to entry wouldn't be there, and that Cloud providers would do all they could to encourage software vendors to help settle this new frontier. Without a robust partner community for both Azure and Amazon Web Services, Cloud adoption will be that much slower for everyone.

HOW: The industry needs interoperability solutions for IT organizations that need to integrate Java and Microsoft .NET applications running in the Cloud - especially as a high-performance alternative to existing Web services protocols. The vision of Cloud interoperability should be any object, on any platform, in any language, anywhere, and at any time. Solutions such as this are needed because existing web services protocols are too slow for IT organizations trying to meet demanding service level agreements frequently associated with Cloud computing, Citrin says.

Fairfax Imaging solves the complex task of integrating Java and .NET systems to enable multiple on-time implementations

BOULDER, Colo., January 31, 2011 - JNBridge, (www.jnbridge.com), the award-winning provider of Java and .NET Framework-based interoperability tools, has been selected by Fairfax Imaging (www.fairfaximaging.com), a leading provider of document and forms management solutions, to integrate its premier .NET-based software product, Quick Modules, with a third-party Java-based Pharmacy Benefits Management (PBM) system, to meet a customers rigid deployment schedule.

As a leader in forms and document processing, Fairfax Imaging is accustomed to integrating its NET-based software product into different customer environments. However, for a prospective client - a large mail-order pharmacy - its professional services team faced a new challenge: quickly deploy a fully integrated solution into the customer's Java-based enterprise within a matter of months.

Fairfax's Quick Modules is based on a pure .NET framework-based infrastructure, so the company employs a staff of developers with deep experience in Microsoft development tools. The mail-order pharmacy client, on the other hand, uses a third-party Java-based PBM system to track prescriptions, patient data and benefits information. To implement the Quick Modules software and provide the customer with a fully functional solution, Fairfax Imaging needed to integrate the PBM system's Java API with its .NET infrastructure -it needed an easy way to expose data from the client's Java-based system to the Quick Modules software stack.

Using proxy generation tools supplied with JNBridgePro, Fairfax Imaging's developers built proxy classes for the third-party Java API. The developers could then call the Java API via those proxies, incorporating them into the .NET code just as if they were native library calls. In this way, JNBridgePro streamlined an otherwise complex integration task and provided an easy way for Quick Modules to access the pharmacy customer's prescription, patient, and benefits information.

"JNBridgePro bridged the gap between our customer's Java platform and our .NET infrastructure in an efficient and seamless manner," said Donna Schmitz, director professional services for Fairfax Imaging. In addition, soon after the completion of this project, Fairfax Imaging subsequently used JNBridgePro to integrate Quick Modules successfully into another mail-order pharmacy client with the same Java-based PBM back-end.

JNBRIDGE PREDICTS INTEROPERABILITY WILL BECOME LYNCHPIN FOR CLOUD TECHNOLOGY SUCCESS IN 2011 AND BEYOND

BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 15, 2010 - JNBridge, (www.jnbridge.com), the leading provider of interoperability tools that connect the Java and .NET Frameworks, today said interoperability will make or break cloud computing success in 2011 and beyond.

"We believe that what is typically discussed under the rubric of cloud interoperability is so insufficient it will destroy the promise of the cloud," said Wayne Citrin, CTO of JNBridge and interoperability expert. "Our vision of cloud interoperability is one where applications and services can be developed in any technology and deployed to any cloud, where cloud services can be accessed by any other cloud service or from any client on the ground. In other words, any platform, anywhere. And until that exists, there will be severe limits on user adoption of cloud computing."

Citrin predicts the top three trends that enterprises should expect in 2011:

1. The realization among cloud users (if not also among cloud providers) that true cloud interoperability really doesn't yet exist - despite cloud vendors' claims to the contrary. There's an "emperor's new clothes" situation with regard to cloud interoperability. Despite what many vendors say, it just doesn't work. Citrin says this will become important in the coming year as users continue to adopt cloud platforms. Initially they will be migrating legacy applications to the cloud, since those applications will be immediately available. But the roadblocks that will come up, particularly with "platform as a service" offerings, may cause users to sour on cloud offerings and cause adoption to be delayed.

2. The introduction of tools and technologies to support interoperability - particularly, the ability to migrate legacy non-cloud applications into the cloud (regardless of the platform for which they were written, and regardless of the cloud platform to which they are being migrated), and the ability to access cloud services from clients running on any platform, regardless of the cloud platform upon which the service resides.

However, he cautions that it needs to be easy. "Customers want things to 'just work,'" Citrin said. "For interoperability to 'just work,' it either will need to be built into the cloud platform offerings themselves, or will need to be third-party cloud services that can just be plugged into directly. The more technically sophisticated customers who create their own cloud services from scratch will have no problem adopting conventional tool-based offerings, but other customers who want to wire their offerings together from best-of-breed services (that are available regardless of platform) will just want these offerings to work together - either right out of the box or through the addition of easy-to-use interoperability services. These customers are used to the idea of connecting services together, and they will be comfortable plugging in a service that allows interoperability."

3. Initial steps supporting the notion that interoperability can be a service, too, - as well as a conventional tool. Cloud services supporting interoperability will begin to be introduced, and will start gathering early adopters. However, Citrin says customers may be disappointed that the services they create will not be usable by up to half their potential market. If they write Java-based services, they will shut out .NET-based customers, and if they write .NET-based (Azure) services, they will shut out Java-based customers. Creators of cloud services may be disappointed by the adoption of their offerings, which again will slow the further roll-out of cloud services.

"Interoperability in the cloud is currently a real problem. Supporting real interoperability is critical to the success and survival of the cloud computing model, and right now it is a large stumbling block that prevents adoption," said Mark Driver, vice president of research at Gartner. "Initiatives that support cloud interoperability in its various aspects will benefit cloud users, vendors of cloud services, and vendors of the underlying cloud platforms."

Aside from interoperability, Citrin sees one other cloud trend in the coming year. "We will see greater support for the 'housekeeping' capabilities that will need to be part of any offering built on cloud platforms. Particularly, features like user access and feature control (also known as 'licensing') and metering/billing support. I suspect these will arrive in the form of service offerings themselves that can be plugged into the newly developed cloud offerings," he said. "However, without robust support for licensing and billing, software developed for cloud platforms won't be anything more than just a toy."

JNBRIDGE RELEASES NEW VERSION OF ITS JMS ADAPTERS FOR BIZTALK AND FOR .NET

BOULDER, Colo., December 6, 2010 - JNBridge, (www.jnbridge.com), the award-winning provider of interoperability tools that connect the Java and .NET frameworks, has released a new version 2.1 of its JMS Adapters for .NET and for BizTalk Server. JNBridge's JMS Adapters enable enterprises to quickly and easily connect JMS infrastructures with BizTalk Server or other .NET applications, resulting in lower costs and reduced deployment times. The latest releases incorporate several customer-driven requests, including fault-tolerant connections and support for ISO 8859-15 encoding of XML documents.

The JNBridge JMS Adapters enable enterprises to integrate any existing JMS (Java Message Service) infrastructure with BizTalk Server or with Microsoft .NET Framework-based applications. With the adapters, customers are able to quickly configure transports and integrate applications, simplifying the complexity and therefore allowing development teams to reduce risk and focus on automating other businesses processes.

"As one of the requestors, we are eagerly awaiting these important new features in the JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server," said Ralf Quebbemann, technology consultant at Ulla Popken GmbH. Version 2.1 of the JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server adds:

Fault-tolerant connections for JMS Server shutdown scenarios. This feature provides the ability to configure specific behaviors for send and receive locations when the JMS server is explicitly brought down. Locations can be configured to either disable or periodically attempt to reconnect to the JMS server.
Support for ISO 8859-15 encoding. Used almost exclusively in Europe, ISO 8895-15 is a single byte encoding that includes the Euro currency character.
Ability to add a unique identifier to a receive location. This allows multiple receive locations to access the same JMS queue or topic providing a mechanism to support concurrent message consumption using JMS message selectors.
New configuration documents for SonicMQ and GlassFish/OpenMQ.
Improved logging and error reporting.

Version 2.1 of the JMS Adapter for .NET adds:

Support for .NET 4.0.
Support for version 2.0 of Microsoft's WCF Line-of-Business adapter framework providing support for Visual Studio 2010.
Support for Microsoft's Azure AppFabric API, allowing .NET client endpoints running in the cloud to consume and produce JMS messages from JMS servers on the ground
Extended configuration and tuning documentation.

Both adapters are now:
• Built on top of JNBridgePro 5.1, which adds support for .NET Framework 4 and Visual Studio 2010.
