JNBRIDGE PREDICTS INTEROPERABILITY WILL BECOME LYNCHPIN FOR CLOUD TECHNOLOGY SUCCESS IN 2011 AND BEYOND

JNBRIDGE PREDICTS INTEROPERABILITY WILL BECOME LYNCHPIN FOR CLOUD TECHNOLOGY SUCCESS IN 2011 AND BEYOND

BOULDER, Colo., Dec. 15, 2010 – JNBridge, (www.jnbridge.com), the leading provider of interoperability tools that connect the Java and .NET Frameworks, today said interoperability will make or break cloud computing success in 2011 and beyond.

”We believe that what is typically discussed under the rubric of cloud interoperability is so insufficient it will destroy the promise of the cloud,” said Wayne Citrin, CTO of JNBridge and interoperability expert. “Our vision of cloud interoperability is one where applications and services can be developed in any technology and deployed to any cloud, where cloud services can be accessed by any other cloud service or from any client on the ground. In other words, any platform, anywhere. And until that exists, there will be severe limits on user adoption of cloud computing.”

Citrin predicts the top three trends that enterprises should expect in 2011:

1. The realization among cloud users (if not also among cloud providers) that true cloud interoperability really doesn’t yet exist – despite cloud vendors’ claims to the contrary. There’s an “emperor’s new clothes” situation with regard to cloud interoperability. Despite what many vendors say, it just doesn’t work. Citrin says this will become important in the coming year as users continue to adopt cloud platforms. Initially they will be migrating legacy applications to the cloud, since those applications will be immediately available.  But the roadblocks that will come up, particularly with “platform as a service” offerings, may cause users to sour on cloud offerings and cause adoption to be delayed.

2. The introduction of tools and technologies to support interoperability – particularly, the ability to migrate legacy non-cloud applications into the cloud (regardless of the platform for which they were written, and regardless of the cloud platform to which they are being migrated), and the ability to access cloud services from clients running on any platform, regardless of the cloud platform upon which the service resides.

However, he cautions that it needs to be easy. “Customers want things to ‘just work,’” Citrin said. “For interoperability to ‘just work,’ it either will need to be built into the cloud platform offerings themselves, or will need to be third-party cloud services that can just be plugged into directly. The more technically sophisticated customers who create their own cloud services from scratch will have no problem adopting conventional tool-based offerings, but other customers who want to wire their offerings together from best-of-breed services (that are available regardless of platform) will just want these offerings to work together – either right out of the box or through the addition of easy-to-use interoperability services. These customers are used to the idea of connecting services together, and they will be comfortable plugging in a service that allows interoperability.”

3. Initial steps supporting the notion that interoperability can be a service, too, – as well as a conventional tool. Cloud services supporting interoperability will begin to be introduced, and will start gathering early adopters. However, Citrin says customers may be disappointed that the services they create will not be usable by up to half their potential market. If they write Java-based services, they will shut out .NET-based customers, and if they write .NET-based (Azure) services, they will shut out Java-based customers. Creators of cloud services may be disappointed by the adoption of their offerings, which again will slow the further roll-out of cloud services.

“Interoperability in the cloud is currently a real problem. Supporting real interoperability is critical to the success and survival of the cloud computing model, and right now it is a large stumbling block that prevents adoption,” said Mark Driver, vice president of research at Gartner. “Initiatives that support cloud interoperability in its various aspects will benefit cloud users, vendors of cloud services, and vendors of the underlying cloud platforms.”

Aside from interoperability, Citrin sees one other cloud trend in the coming year. “We will see greater support for the ‘housekeeping’ capabilities that will need to be part of any offering built on cloud platforms. Particularly, features like user access and feature control (also known as ‘licensing’) and metering/billing support. I suspect these will arrive in the form of service offerings themselves that can be plugged into the newly developed cloud offerings,” he said. “However, without robust support for licensing and billing, software developed for cloud platforms won’t be anything more than just a toy.”

JNBRIDGE RELEASES NEW VERSION OF ITS JMS ADAPTERS FOR BIZTALK AND FOR .NET

JNBRIDGE RELEASES NEW VERSION OF ITS JMS ADAPTERS FOR BIZTALK AND FOR .NET

BOULDER, Colo., December 6, 2010 – JNBridge, (www.jnbridge.com), the award-winning provider of interoperability tools that connect the Java and .NET frameworks, has released a new version 2.1 of its JMS Adapters for .NET and for BizTalk Server. JNBridge’s JMS Adapters enable enterprises to quickly and easily connect JMS infrastructures with BizTalk Server or other .NET applications, resulting in lower costs and reduced deployment times. The latest releases incorporate several customer-driven requests, including fault-tolerant connections and support for ISO 8859-15 encoding of XML documents.

The JNBridge JMS Adapters enable enterprises to integrate any existing JMS (Java Message Service) infrastructure with BizTalk Server or with Microsoft .NET Framework-based applications. With the adapters, customers are able to quickly configure transports and integrate applications, simplifying the complexity and therefore allowing development teams to reduce risk and focus on automating other businesses processes.

“As one of the requestors, we are eagerly awaiting these important new features in the JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server,” said Ralf Quebbemann, technology consultant at Ulla Popken GmbH. “The adapter has already greatly simplified the complex task of integrating BizTalk with our existing JMS infrastructure for all three JMS implementations – WebSphere, SonicMQ and GlassFish – and eliminated what would otherwise have been a potentially long and costly development effort. We rely on JNBridge — we couldn’t have done this ourselves.”

Version 2.1 of the JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server adds:

  • Fault-tolerant connections for JMS Server shutdown scenarios. This feature provides the ability to configure specific behaviors for send and receive locations when the JMS server is explicitly brought down. Locations can be configured to either disable or periodically attempt to reconnect to the JMS server.
  • Support for ISO 8859-15 encoding. Used almost exclusively in Europe, ISO 8895-15 is a single byte encoding that includes the Euro currency character.
  • Ability to add a unique identifier to a receive location. This allows multiple receive locations to access the same JMS queue or topic providing a mechanism to support concurrent message consumption using JMS message selectors.
  • New configuration documents for SonicMQ and GlassFish/OpenMQ.
  • Improved logging and error reporting.

Version 2.1 of the JMS Adapter for .NET adds:

  • Support for .NET 4.0.
  • Support for version 2.0 of Microsoft’s WCF Line-of-Business adapter framework providing support for Visual Studio 2010.
  • Support for Microsoft’s Azure AppFabric API, allowing .NET client endpoints running in the cloud to consume and produce JMS messages from JMS servers on the ground
  • Extended configuration and tuning documentation.

Both adapters are now:
• Built on top of JNBridgePro 5.1, which adds support for .NET Framework 4 and Visual Studio 2010.

“This particular set of new features demonstrates how crucial the adapters have become to some of our enterprise customers’ business processes,” said Wayne Citrin, CTO of JNBridge. “It’s a real pleasure to help our customers successfully implement interoperability in these kinds of situations and contexts where before it just wasn’t practical or feasible.”

ULLA POPKEN USES JNBRIDGE JMS ADAPTER FOR BIZTALK SERVER TO INTEGRATE MULTIPLE JMS SERVERS WITH BIZTALK

ULLA POPKEN USES JNBRIDGE JMS ADAPTER FOR BIZTALK SERVER TO INTEGRATE MULTIPLE JMS SERVERS WITH BIZTALK

JNBridge JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server allowed fashion retailer to quickly integrate disparate platforms and focus on automating business processes

BOULDER, Colo., September 20, 2010 – JNBridge, (www.jnbridge.com), the award-winning provider of Java and .NET Framework-based interoperability tools, today announced that Ulla Popken GmbH  (www.ullapopken.de), a German-based retail fashion supplier, selected JNBridge’s JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server to integrate multiple existing JMS implementations with BizTalk. Since using the adapter, the company has been able to move into production rapidly, without the time and cost associated with internal development.

Ulla Popken fashion allows all women the opportunity to develop their own style – regardless of size. With the theme “fashion that suits me,” the Ulla Popken label presents its customers with a changing collection every month. As a multi-channel business, Ulla Popken sells in more than 300 stores, by mail-order and internet, and with the help of selected franchise partners in Europe and non-European countries, and also with shop-in-shop partners.

To integrate applications, automate business processes, and improve business responsiveness and agility, Ulla Popken GmbH made a strategic decision to focus its IT development efforts on Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) applications that rely on Java Message Service (JMS). Central to the company’s IT infrastructure is Microsoft BizTalk Server, which supports enterprise application integration services, business process management, and interoperability between Java EE and .NET applications. To deploy Java EE applications that expose functionality and services via JMS messaging, IT developers needed a way to implement reliable communications with BizTalk Server. Within the company’s application portfolio, several core business applications required specific Java EE and JMS servers – each with its own JMS implementation. For example, the mail order system relied on IBM WebSphere. In addition, other applications used Progress SonicMQ and GlassFish (an open source application server) as the JMS provider. Ulla Popken therefore needed a way to facilitate durable asynchronous messaging from Microsoft BizTalk Server to three different JMS implementations – WebSphere, SonicMQ, and GlassFish.

“We needed a way to integrate these JMS technologies and intercommunicate with our BizTalk Server,” recalled Ralf Quebbemann, technology consultant at Ulla Popken GmbH. “If we tried to do this ourselves, it would have been a significant development effort that would have taken months – if not years – to complete.”

Looking for a solution that involved less cost and resulted in faster deployment, developers researched available Java and .NET interoperability solutions and learned about the JNBridge JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server. Since the adapter is designed to work with any JMS implementation, it was, as Quebbemann described, “perfect for our needs.”

The JNBridge JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server encapsulates JMS client capabilities into a standard BizTalk Server adapter. For each different JMS implementation that Ulla Popken employs, the adapter is configured as endpoints specifically bound to send and receive ports, allowing a BizTalk orchestration to produce and consume messages to and from JMS queues and topics.

“While Ulla Popken’s use of three different JMS servers in their architecture may be unusual, our JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server is designed to work with any JMS implementation,” said Wayne Citrin, CTO of JNBridge. “The adapter enabled Ulla Popken to quickly integrate their disparate JMS services into an infrastructure based around BizTalk Server.”
Ulla Popken experienced these benefits in using the adapter:

  • Flexibility. With a single product from JNBridge, developers integrated all three JMS implementations with BizTalk and quickly solved the challenge of intercommunication.
  • Simplicity, ease-of-use, and full support. Developers were able to easily configure the adapter for each JMS server. When they encountered problems that they couldn’t resolve on their own, JNBridge engineers were quick to respond.
  • Fast integration. Since Ulla Popken developers selected JNBridge’s commercially available JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server, they were able to move into production rapidly, without the time and cost associated with internal development.
  • Throughput and stability. In production the adapter supported solid performance and reliable messaging. “The adapter worked just as we expected,” Quebbemann remarked. “The product was very stable, provided good throughput, and delivered reliable messaging for our full spectrum of JMS applications.”

What: Unconference: “Interoperability Issues in the Cloud”

Cloud technologies are supposed to be “interoperable,” as they generally are based on Web services and supposedly adhere to standards.  Most cloud vendors tout their support for interoperability: both Cloud-to-Cloud and within a single cloud platform.

However, despite the promise, there are real problems in actually getting cloud interoperability to work, either Cloud-to-Cloud (e.g. between Windows Azure and Amazon Web Services) or within a single cloud platform (e.g. running Java on Windows Azure).

In this “unconference” discussion, Citrin and Heinzman will lead participants in discussing where current cloud interoperability falls short, exploring what true cloud interoperability should be, and examining how to resolve cloud interoperability issues. Participants will be given the means to develop a road map toward implementing true interoperability now and in the future, as cloud technology matures.

“Bridging Transactions from Java EE to .NET”
Cross-platform transactions between enterprise Java and .NET should be easy, right? After all, both platforms have implemented the same specification. How hard can it be? This session will attempt to answer that question by providing an in-depth look at distributed transactions, including implementations in enterprise Java and .NET. Technologies that provide cross-platform transactions will be demoed providing a look at code from examples using WS-AT/WS-Coor and direct bridging using a shared-memory JVM-to-CLR implementation. In addition, the session will discuss performance benchmarking, “gotchas,” tips and tricks and the move towards eXtreme Transaction Processing and what that means for current Java EE and .NET based technologies.

GRAEBEL COMPANIES INC. TAPS JNBRIDGE TO SIMPLIFY TRANSITION TO SOA FRAMEWORK FOR RELOCATION SERVICES OFFERING

JNBridge’s JMS Adapter for .NET allows Graebel to leverage existing business logic and easily integrate JMS messaging with a .NET-based SOA framework

BOULDER, Colo., June 7, 2010 – JNBridge, (www.jnbridge.com), the award-winning provider of Java and .NET Framework-based interoperability tools, today announced Graebel Companies, Inc. (www.graebel.com), a Denver-based global relocation and moving services firm, has successfully incorporated JNBridge’s JMS Adapter for .NET with their .NET-based SOA infrastructure in order to implement durable messaging between a broad spectrum of .NET applications and JMS. As a result, Graebel was able to leverage existing business logic and trim time to market, deploying production applications in just under 60-days.

Since its founding in 1950, Graebel has grown dramatically from a local mover into an international full-service relocation and move management organization. As the company expanded, Graebel became increasingly adept at managing its customers’ logistics and the IT systems and applications that support its business. Early on, an implementation of Oracle® Financials gave rise to a variety of independent Oracle database applications. In recent years, the centralized Graebel IT organization focused on evolving and simplifying the underlying application infrastructure.

“We run a landscape of applications,” explained Brad Siler, Chief Financial Officer of Graebel Companies, Inc. “We needed a standard way to integrate applications, which started our move to an SOA infrastructure.”

Graebel had already implemented an SOA framework using .NET to integrate data across divisions and build information portals targeted at specific customer types. The SOA infrastructure allows Graebel to deliver relocation services quickly and cost-effectively to various customers, such as its corporate clients’ transferees.

At the backbone of the SOA framework, the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is a standards-based infrastructure for building composite applications that integrate with legacy back-end data and services. The ESB includes a queuing mechanism that routes messages between service endpoints. Using Microsoft .NET WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) APIs, Graebel wanted to implement durable messaging between .NET services and a Java Message Service infrastructure (specifically Apache ActiveMQ and Oracle Advanced Queuing).

In researching interoperability solutions through SOA forums, Graebel developers learned about the JNBridge JMS Adapter for .NET. The adapter aligned perfectly with their requirements because it provides seamless integration between a JMS infrastructure and any .NET application that can consume a Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) endpoint.

“We liked the fact that the adapter had a WCF binding that plugged right into our .NET applications,” said Siler. “With our extensive set of portal applications, there are multiple endpoints for message routing, including internal and external portals based on SharePoint Server and ASP.NET. As a result of using the adapter, we were able to trim time-to-market, deploying the adapter with production applications in just under 60 days.”

As Graebel continues to build out applications, the JNBridge JMS Adapter for .NET is positioned to deliver critical integration capabilities that can help to shorten the development cycle.

“The JNBridge JMS Adapter for .NET provides native binding to WCF, so the Graebel developers were able to configure it directly through WCF services,” said Wayne Citrin, CTO of JNBridge. “And with support for durable messaging, Graebel was able to ensure message delivery between their .NET applications and JMS.”

BENEFITFOCUS USES JNBRIDGE JMS ADAPTER FOR BIZTALK SERVER TO STREAMLINE INCOMING DATA INTO BIZTALK INFRASTRUCTURE

The JNBridge JMS Adapter for BizTalk enables Benefitfocus to integrate Java messages with BizTalk without the cost, risk and time-to-deploy associated with an open source or internally developed solution

BOULDER, Colo., March 29, 2010 – JNBridge, (www.jnbridge.com), the award-winning provider of Java and .NET Framework interoperability tools, has provided Benefitfocus® (www.benefitfocus.com), the largest healthcare benefits software provider in the United States, with the JNBridge JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server. Benefitfocus is using the JNBridge JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server to integrate incoming Java Message Service (JMS)-based carrier data into its BizTalk Server infrastructure without the cost, risk and time-to-deploy associated with an open source or internally developed solution.

“We had a strong need to integrate Java and .NET applications via our BizTalk infrastructure. The JNBridge adapter did exactly what it said it would do, right out of the box,” said Don Taylor, chief technology officer for Benefitfocus. “We went from downloading the evaluation copy into full production in just 45 days.”

A leader in providing Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions for the healthcare industry, Benefitfocus provides employers, health carriers and consumers a single Web-based platform for benefit shopping, enrollment, management and industry standard data exchange. With an emphasis on simplifying or eliminating paper processes, Benefitfocus offers a wealth of Web solutions on the Benefitfocus PlatformTM, including Benefitfocus eBillingTM for easy-to-use, secure online payments.

To merge different software systems and build applications that deliver highly effective business processes, Benefitfocus utilizes Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006 for its back-end enterprise application infrastructure. In the process of building out its integration infrastructure, Benefitfocus needed a way for BizTalk to communicate reliably with its electronic enrollment tool, eEnrollment. Integrating Java-based eEnrollment made BizTalk critical in the customer onboarding process.

Java enterprise applications traditionally use JMS (Java Message Service), a standard messaging API that enables distributed communications and allows application components to create, send, receive and process messages. Software architects at Benefitfocus wanted the enrollment application to publish messages to a JMS queue, but they needed a dependable way for BizTalk to consume messages and support Java and .NET communications. Benefitfocus only had two months remaining in its software release cycle to complete this significant integration task.

When Benefitfocus’ developers started looking at how to integrate BizTalk and JMS, they discovered open source code that could help them construct the needed solution. They began to build the open source code in a test environment, but soon hit a series of show-stopping bugs. “Because of time constraints, we had to reject the open source approach,” explained Taylor. “The documentation was spotty, there was no formal support, and we faced the task of debugging the code ourselves within an extremely short project window.”

“The JNBridge JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server encapsulates JMS client capabilities into a standard BizTalk adapter,” explained Wayne Citrin, CTO of JNBridge. “We have designed the adapter to be easily configured as endpoints that are specifically bound to send and receive ports, allowing a BizTalk orchestration to produce and consume messages to and from JMS queues and topics. We are committed to making our solutions flexible and easily adaptable to work with any JMS implementation.”

Based on proven success in deploying the online enrollment solution with the JNBridge JMS Adapter for BizTalk Server, Benefitfocus now uses the adapter to streamline other application integration tasks.

CAMBRIDGESOFT UTILIZES JNBRIDGE’S INTEROP TECHNOLOGY TO PROTECT MULTINATIONAL DRUG COMPANY’S INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

CambridgeSoft uses JNBridgePro to simplify the complex task of Java and .NET interoperability

BOULDER, Colo., March 3, 2010 – JNBridge, (www.jnbridge.com), the award-winning provider of Java and .NET Framework-based interoperability tools, enabled  developers at CambridgeSoft Corporation (www.cambridgesoft.com)  to easily integrate Java-based digital signature APIs into their .NET-based electronic lab notebook product. CambridgeSoft supplies discovery, collaboration, and knowledge enterprise solutions, desktop software, scientific databases and consulting services to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and chemical industries.

Using JNBridgePro, developers at CambridgeSoft now are easily able to integrate third-party Java-based digital signature technology into the .NET infrastructure of E-Notebook – CambridgeSoft’s electronic lab notebook software – to quickly meet business and compliance requirements of a major pharmaceutical customer.

“It takes an incredible amount of work to solve such a complex interoperability problem,” said Alfred Nehme, director of application development at CambridgeSoft. “JNBridgePro provided a level of Java and .NET integration that otherwise would have been very difficult and time-consuming to do ourselves.”

Protecting intellectual property (IP) and adhering to government regulations are crucial requirements for organizations engaged in biotechnology, drug discovery and chemical research. To comply with record keeping requirements in laboratory notes, CambridgeSoft implements digital signature and efficient archiving capabilities in its E-Notebook product. Using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology, E-Notebook can embed digital signatures and timestamps, creating a reliable electronic record that cannot be falsified.

Recently a major multinational pharmaceutical customer wanted to use  CambridgeSoft’s E-Notebook, but required a different Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for digital signatures. The customer needed their chemists to sign experiments related to drug development using the same third-party, Java-based digital signature infrastructure that was already deployed in other parts of the company. To deliver this functionality, CambridgeSoft needed to integrate the required Java PKI API with E-Notebook, which is based on a .NET architecture. CambridgeSoft used JNBridgePro to simplify the interoperability between Java and .NET, allowing E-Notebook to call the Java APIs from .NET and thus fulfill their customer’s requirements.

CambridgeSoft project leaders now are easily able to embed the needed Java digital signature APIs rapidly into the E-Notebook application. JNBridgePro includes proxy generation plug-ins for Eclipse and Visual Studio IDEs, as well as an intuitive standalone GUI. Using the GUI, CambridgeSoft developers created proxies for the Java APIs that simplified access to the needed Java classes.

“JNBridgePro enables developers to mix and match technologies between Java and .NET,” said Wayne Citrin, CTO of JNBridge. “Customers appreciate the ability to retain their current investments while building applications that incorporate best-of-breed components from both platforms.”
