For more than a decade, FreeWave has provided Williams with the most reliable, lowest power consumption wireless data radio solutions for integrated well head automation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), I/O and backhaul, plunger lift, gas flow measurement, temperature, pressure and tank level monitoring, cathodic protection and more.

Williams is one of the largest volume transporters of natural gas in the United States and, as such, needs a robust communications network to effectively find, gather, process and transport natural gas around the country. Williams initially selected FreeWave back in 1999 to supply spread spectrum wireless data transceivers for Williams' WinGate^(TM) series of products. Ever since, the relationship has grown significantly to the extent that Williams now uses a suite of FreeWave products, such as its DGR, FGR, FGR2 serial and I/O radios, FGR-CP, HTP 900RE and FGR2-PE radios.

The latest installations for Williams' gas measurement applications reflect this mutual growth and trust with FreeWave. Williams Field Service is currently migrating from the DGR radios to the FGR and FGR2 series for serial communications (RS-232 and RS-485). In addition, Williams is working toward switching out existing radios from other communications providers, as well as replacing older data control systems with FreeWave's FGR2-PE solution. FreeWave's new FGR2-PE-U data radio is a logical replacement because it has a built-in terminal server, web browser and two RJ45 Ethernet ports and two RJ45 serial ports. Furthermore, Williams is deploying FreeWave's FGR-CP radios to monitor its cathodic protection system (including the rectifiers) and safeguard its natural gas pipelines and pipe-to-soil test stations. Now, Williams can connect the CP radios to its existing DGR and FGR network and view this on its SCADA host. Williams also is using FreeWave's FGR2-IO data radios to control valve position and monitor other sites where the company needs to read discrete or analog values associated with flow rates, tank level, and pressure or temperature devices. All FreeWave radios - serial, Ethernet and IO - integrate seamlessly throughout the field and Williams' communications network is easily expandable as the company adds new well sites and pipelines across the country.

FreeWave will display its new licensed LRS Series and offer additional demos for visitors at its booth (#219). FreeWave and Superior Optimization Win Wireless Plunger Lift Implementation for Large Oil and Gas Company

Successful pilot, network design services and reliable technology prove FreeWave and Superior are the top choice for a major oil and gas installation

BOULDER, Colo., May 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, along with its reseller, Superior Optimization, were chosen to implement advanced IO, plunger lift control and build a wireless communication backbone for a large oil and gas field located in Texas. After a lengthy process, including a pilot and network design services, Superior Optimization entered the bid and beat the competitors by winning an installation that would require roughly 830 FreeWave Radios.

"FreeWave took the time to meet with the end-user and discuss why their solution would be ideal for this installation," said Kirk Mehaffey, director of business and co-owner at Superior Optimization. "Their efforts combined with an in-depth pilot and design proved FreeWave radios were best choice. The biggest differentiator for FreeWave and Superior was that we substantiated a bid with all of the engineering research, design and implementation that was compiled during the network design phase."

The system design specifications that FreeWave and Superior Optimization completed prior to the bid detailed everything that would be required to ensure seamless integration of the communication system, including details about, radios, cables, antennas, antenna heights and more. Additionally, a pilot project automated plunger lift operations with five wells using FreeWave FGR2-IO radios. After approximately four weeks of the network design process, FreeWave and Superior Optimization submitted the bid. Because the trials were a success, the end-user was confident that FreeWave's radios not only could handle the project and conduct data transmission on a real-time basis, but were a better choice over competing solutions.

"This project is a great example of how FreeWave and Superior seamlessly combined efforts to win a major installation," said Ashish Sharma chief marketing officer of FreeWave Technologies. "Between the research, planning and design, Superior worked hard to provide a complete picture of the FreeWave solution and ensure that the best investment was with us. The result is a cohesive team effort focused on addressing customer needs and providing clear value."

The end-user wanted a solution that had the capability to poll critical data every 15 minutes. The installation includes radio coverage for approximately 400 sites, a major investment for the oil and gas end-user. In order to ensure the polling requirements are met, FreeWave's FGR2- IO Masters, IO Expansion modules, FGR2 IO Slaves and a few HTPlus radios will be deployed across the field. Each FGR2-IO master will monitor approximately 50 wells, allowing the oil and gas corporation to receive data quickly.

"One of the reasons this project was a success is because FreeWave stands by its reputation for providing highly reliable wireless data radios, excellent diagnostic tools and top-notch customer support," added Mehaffey. As oil and gas companies work toward greater automation and e-business solutions, the challenges of getting real-time, reliable data from remote locations continues to be one of the greatest hurdles. New models of FreeWave's popular IO Expansion line provide additional IO to any serial network

The new additions make it easier for customers to leverage their existing hardware investments with significant performance improvements. The FreeWave IO Expansion family is especially well-suited for applications in the water purification, wastewater treatment, oil and gas automation, agriculture irrigation, monitoring and control markets.

"We created our IO Expansion series to meet the needs of customers who want more IO, but don't want to have to purchase a new system to get the additional IO points," explained Ken Granader, vice president of sales at FreeWave. The IO Expansion Module is known for offering a scalable IO solution with up to 12 IO points per module. This adds significant flexibility to an existing FreeWave Modbus IO network. Now, with the introduction of the Serial Base, expandable IO points can be added to any existing serial network regardless of manufacturer. Along with the peace of mind that goes with 100 percent temperature tested radios, users can rest assured of measurement accuracy. The 0.10 percent accuracy of analog input measurements across the entire operating temperature means that users can be confident in the reported measurements and reduce their process errors.
New models and additional enhancements to FreeWave's IO Expansion family include:
•    Serial Base: IOE-X-4422PC - with this model, local IO can be added to any serial equipment or serial wireless network, such as existing non-FreeWave wireless serial networks and existing PLCs or RTUs. Both solutions allow customers to increase the number of IO points without the expense of upgrading to new communication or control hardware.
•    Radio Base: FGR2-IO-IOE - provides a wireless base for IO Expansion to any new or existing FGR serial network with up to 60 miles with line-of-sight (LOS).
•    Expansion Module: IOE-X-4422-P - offers universally configurable IO expansion to either the Radio Base (FGR2-IO-IOE) or Serial Base (IOEX-4422PC).
