DAVID SOUTHERN OF FREEWAVE TECHNOLOGIES APPOINTED AS OFFICER OF NACE’S ROCKY MOUNTAIN SECTION

Southern selected as secretary/treasurer for 2008-2009 program year

BOULDER, Colo., June 10, 2008 – FreeWave Technologies, the largest independent provider of high performance spread spectrum and licensed radio products and services (www.freewave.com), today announced that David Southern has been appointed  secretary/treasurer of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers’ (NACE) Rocky Mountain Section.

Southern leads business development activities for FreeWave Technologies, a leading designer and manufacturer of spread spectrum wireless solutions. Southern has 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, mining, hazardous waste remediation, petrochemical and refining industries. Prior to joining FreeWave, he was a Business Manager for an Emerson Process Management representative. In 1978, as a summer intern on an offshore oil production platform, Southern learned firsthand the basics of corrosion prevention and the everyday importance cathodic protection plays in mission critical operations. He has authored or co-authored several U.S. patents and has been published in several industry magazines including Pipeline & Gas Technology, POWER, American Oil & Gas Reporter and Compressor Tech II. He is a 1982 graduate of the School of Mines.

“Having participated in several NACE conferences and training events across the country over the years, it’s an honor to be elected into an officer position with NACE Rocky Mountain Section,” said Southern. “It is an exceptional organization of which I am proud to be a member and now an officer.”
NACE was established in 1943. Its mission is to protect people, assets and environment from the effects of corrosion. The organization consists of more than 17,000 members in 100 countries. NACE International is involved in every industry and area of corrosion prevention and control – from chemical processing and water systems to transportation and infrastructure protection. The Rocky Mountain Section serves NACE membership in the states of Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico as well as parts of Utah, Arizona, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. The organization meets once a month to discuss the latest advancements in corrosion prevention as well as sponsors an annual Short Course in the spring of each year, attended by over 500 CP professionals in 2008.

WHAT: Pipeline Integrity Automation

Energy and pipeline companies wrestle to meet new stricter state and federal pipeline integrity requirements while simultaneously trying to control operating costs. Recent, unfortunate, pipeline news events pushed corrosion and cathodic protection to front page news across the nation to the extent that the U.S. Congress and several states passed legislation directed specifically toward cathodic protection practices. Many companies are looking to new technologies and automation for answers. Unfortunately, ever changing cell phone technologies left some companies scrambling to stay ahead of telemetry obsolescence. Effective answers to critical issues affecting public safety are often found in a combination of both old and new technology.

In this presentation, Southern will focus on how Cathodic Protection Remote Monitoring Units automatically collect and report mission critical, corrosion prevention data from remote rectifiers and test points and transmit that data back to a central data collection system via wireless, radio modems–often using a company’s existing radio networks.
