WHAT: ”Implementing Remote Wireless Monitoring of Pipeline Integrity and Cathodic Protection

Energy and pipeline companies are wrestling to meet new, more strict, state and federal pipeline integrity requirements, while trying to control operating costs. Many companies are looking to new technologies and automation for answers. Effective answers to critical issues affecting public safety often are found in a combination of both old and new technology.

The key building block to a cost effective, pipeline integrity, corrosion protection program is vital, timely monitoring and reporting of cathodic protection data from remote corrosion protection field sites to a centralized data collection system complete with automated regulatory reporting. The first step in implementing this level of automation technology exists today in the form of supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA). Now there is a radio-based system that can support these requirements.

This presentation will discuss how to implement remote wireless new cathodic protection monitoring radios that are relatively low-cost, easy-to-install, have no licensing fees and no monthly, re-occurring fees.

“The Advantages of Implementing Wireless IO Over Wired Alternatives”

Regardless of the industry, historically, hardwiring has been the only option available for users to connect instrumentation. However, new spread spectrum technologies give users the ability to connect instrumentation in the field without the need for costly wired infrastructure. Now, asset information is available from applied and embedded sensory points enabling sophisticated diagnostics, remote monitoring and control, and plant optimization.

Digging trenches, laying conduit, and pulling cable makes acquiring these signals costly – not to mention the engineering costs. Wireless IO interfaces are less expensive – in some cases costing tens of thousands of dollars less than traditional wired alternatives.

Control and Maintenance engineers and wireless specialists will benefit from this presentation by having the information necessary to make wireless IO business decisions. Attendees will also learn to identify the key economic business drivers and to develop a decision matrix to maximize and leverage existing investments in technology
