Industry expert Craig Held to speak on Exploring New Options for Cathodic Protection Remote Monitoring
SALT LAKE CITY, UT, NACE CORROSION 2012 (Booth #2300), March 12, 2012 — FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, will showcase its latest technologies for cathodic protection at the NACE Corrosion 2012 Conference and Exposition (http://events.nace.org/conferences/c2012/index_overview.asp). Besides demonstrating its latest products for cathodic protection applications in oil and gas, water/wastewater industries, among other marketplaces, industry expert, Craig Held, will be speaking on new options for cathodic protection remote monitoring.
“Protection of our pipeline and waterway infrastructure is vital to the overall safety, day-to-day commerce and operation of our country,” explained Craig Held, general manager, international at FreeWave Technologies. “Mitigating problems before they happen can avert disasters from occurring and ensure safety and protection of our critical infrastructure that we all rely upon each and every day.”
FreeWave will be showing a number of its latest product offerings, including its popular FGR2 Family of Radios, HTplus, IO-E, Battery Powered Waterproof Unit (BPWU) and the GX-CP, its newest cathodic protection wireless radio at 2.4 GHz frequency.
In addition, Held will be presenting a paper entitled “Exploring New Options for Cathodic Protection Remote Monitoring” on Monday, March 12 at 2:30 p.m. in the Salt Palace Convention Center, Room 155 F. Held will examine key considerations for implementing an automated remote monitoring solution. To help operators make the right cathodic protection choice, he will review the most effective security offerings, discuss seamless integration of multiple pipe-to-soils with IO Expansion technologies and highlight the A/C signal interference detection.

WHAT: “Applications and Innovations for Battery Powered Remote Operating”
Today, when it comes to cathodic protection remote monitoring, automation is making its way as a leading solution. A relative new comer to automated remote monitoring is the use of licensed and spread spectrum wireless data radios that collect mission-critical data. Battery-powered remote monitoring is a new solution that is available for pipe-to-soil measurement. Unlike a traditional wireless system, this automated remote monitoring system option can be submersed and installed underground. This allows operators to more effectively protect their assets in extremely difficult environments. Battery-powered remote monitoring eliminates the need for manual measurements and provides real-time data from the field directly to the user’s fingertips to the point where it’s feasible to eliminate most, if not all, pipe-to-soil manual monitoring.
This presentation will discuss remote monitoring options that are available and affordable in a secure proprietary network with no connection fees. In addition, it will provide a real-world case study example of how technologies, like this are being deployed at a major international airport to improve its automated monitoring.

FREEWAVE TECHNOLOGIES OFFERS WIRELESS BATTERY-POWERED RADIO OPTION FOR REMOTE MONITORING
Company releases the first submersible solution for cathodic protection remote monitoring
BOULDER, Colo., March 9, 2011 — FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, announced the first wireless battery-powered proprietary radio network device for cathodic protection remote monitoring. The wireless Battery-powered Waterproof Submersible BPRM CP RMU is the first of its kind on the market today. It is ideal for pipe-to-soil cathodic protection applications in the water/wastewater and oil and gas industries where users only require access to the radio once every two years. This solution is especially suited for applications in need of a polling frequency once a week or less.
“The battery-powered solution was created based on customer demand,” explained Craig Held, General Manager, International at FreeWave. “We needed to provide a solution that can keep a low profile and is water-proof, submersible and targeted toward installations with access issues. Our battery-powered solution meets these needs. Not only does it help operators work toward regulatory compliance with monitoring, but is a step toward reaching active mitigation.”
A game changer in cathodic protection remote monitoring, the Battery-powered Waterproof Submersible BPRM CP RMU is available in both 900MHz and 2.4 GHz frequencies. With a battery life forecasted at 4.5 years, this new radio solution allows for minimal maintenance at sites where access is limited. The new BPRM CP RMU also offers three pipe-to-soils instead of one. Additionally, the antenna is the only piece of the equipment that is visible above ground, making it less vulnerable to vandalism and theft.
The three key benefits that make this solution unique include:
“We are pleased to be the first to provide this specialized type of solution for cathodic protection remote monitoring,” said Held. “As with all FreeWave wireless data radios, the battery-powered solution provides flexibility, reliability, long range and low power consumption that our customers have grown to expect in our products.”
Availability, Configurations, and Pricing
The Battery-powered Waterproof Submersible BPRM CP RMU will be available for shipping in the second quarter. Pricing varies, depending upon customer configuration. For more information please visit: www.freewave.com.

Building the Ideal Communication Network
There are many challenges that you will encounter when piecing together the ideal communication network. While many would have you believe that you can easily accomplish your communication goals with a single product, just remember one thing, you can’t! Historically many mistakes have been made due to lack of planning, insuffi cient research and of course the mother of all mistakes, poor decisionmaking. It is human nature to want to trust our colleagues, our neighbors, the nice sales person from the company you just learned about, or the reliable representative you’ve known for years. The fi rst piece of advice is you will take the fall for a bad decision. If you keep in mind the consequences of making a bad decision you are on the right track to creating the ideal communication network.
Steps for Success
As with achieving any goal you must understand where they want to end up. If you want to end up with a communication network that doesn’t meet your needs today or in the future then all you need to do is buy a few communication devices for a low price, install them in the fi eld and let the good times roll. However, if you want to build a communication network that meets both your current needs and your long-term goals, then take the time to build a communications strategy complete with tactics and measurable objectives. The intent of this article is to outline good processes and provide steps to assist you in deploying a communication network that can meet your objectives and needs for many years to come.

WHAT: ”Using Wireless Networking and Remote Sensor Monitoring in Pivot Irrigation”
As technology is becoming more affordable to both private and corporate farms, the use of telemetry technologies not only is creating value to businesses but being utilized in new ways. The latest telemetry trend is “wireless instrumentation” or the ability to control or monitor analog and digital signals without the constraints of wire. These signals may be used to communicate to and from the pivot to the farm to check moisture and temperature sensors, chemical soil samples, wind speed for the best time to water, and the actual pivot location and pump power usage. This capability, together with Internet access, allows the entire pivot system to be viewed anytime via a smart telephone. Steele will review how to efficiently and affordably track data for pivot irrigation farms, as well as weigh the pros and cons of newer versus traditional systems of operation.
