WHAT: “Applications and Innovations for Battery-powered Cathodic Protection Remote Monitoring”

As automated remote monitoring with wireless data communication radios increasingly is becoming a popular choice for many pipeline, energy and utility operators, additional wireless options have begun to emerge. Battery-powered remote monitoring is a new solution that is available for pipe-to-soil measurement. Unlike a traditional wireless system, this automated remote monitoring option can be submersed and installed underground. It offers a number of economic benefits, such as real-time compliance and asset protection; continuous, automated remote monitoring – saving precious resources which can be deployed for other more pressing business concerns.

Traditionally, a technician would manually collect pipe-to-soil measurements while making inspections of the right of way or the effected structure. Battery-powered remote monitoring eliminates the need for manual measurements and provides real-time data from the field directly to the user’s fingertips. These new systems are designed for pipe-to-soil users who are committed to exceeding compliance requirements and moving from measurement to active mitigation. Held will discuss remote monitoring options that are available and affordable in a secure proprietary network with no connection fees. He will cover the economic benefits of a battery-powered remote monitoring system and will provide a real-world case study of how technologies, like this, are being deployed at a major international airport to improve its remote, automated monitoring.

WHAT:          “Applications and Innovations for Battery-powered Remote Monitoring”

Today, when it comes to monitoring cathodic protection, automation is making its way as a leading solution. Several issues are coming to together to make this a more mission critical need than ever before. These include: the need for better efficiency in the deployment of human assets; mitigation not only measurement; increased scrutiny on how well the assets entrusted are being monitored and protected; and, the increased penetration of development into remote locations while the growing population is forcing infrastructure development needs more broadly and penetrating already developed areas.

As automated remote monitoring with wireless data-communication radios are increasingly becoming a popular choice for many pipeline, energy and utility operators, additional wireless options have begun to emerge. Battery-powered remote monitoring is a new solution available for pipe-to-soil measurement. Unlike a traditional wireless system, this automated remote monitoring system option is waterproof and can be submersed and installed underground.

This presentation will discuss remote monitoring options that are available and affordable in a secure proprietary network with no connection fees. It will cover the applications and advantages of new waterproof, battery–powered remote monitoring technology. FREEWAVE TECHNOLOGIES OFFERS WIRELESS BATTERY-POWERED RADIO OPTION FOR REMOTE MONITORING

FREEWAVE TECHNOLOGIES OFFERS WIRELESS BATTERY-POWERED RADIO OPTION FOR REMOTE MONITORING

Company releases the first submersible solution for cathodic protection remote monitoring

BOULDER, Colo., March 9, 2011 — FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, announced the first wireless battery-powered proprietary radio network device for cathodic protection remote monitoring. The wireless Battery-powered Waterproof Submersible BPRM CP RMU is the first of its kind on the market today. It is ideal for pipe-to-soil cathodic protection applications in the water/wastewater and oil and gas industries where users only require access to the radio once every two years. This solution is especially suited for applications in need of a polling frequency once a week or less.

“The battery-powered solution was created based on customer demand,” explained Craig Held, General Manager, International at FreeWave. “We needed to provide a solution that can keep a low profile and is water-proof, submersible and targeted toward installations with access issues. Our battery-powered solution meets these needs. Not only does it help operators work toward regulatory compliance with monitoring, but is a step toward reaching active mitigation.”

A game changer in cathodic protection remote monitoring, the Battery-powered Waterproof Submersible BPRM CP RMU is available in both 900MHz and 2.4 GHz frequencies. With a battery life forecasted at 4.5 years, this new radio solution allows for minimal maintenance at sites where access is limited. The new BPRM CP RMU also offers three pipe-to-soils instead of one. Additionally, the antenna is the only piece of the equipment that is visible above ground, making it less vulnerable to vandalism and theft.

The three key benefits that make this solution unique include:

  • Three pipe-to-soils, making it an ideal solution for monitoring pipe-to-soil potential.
  • Waterproof and submersible, making it especially suitable for water/wastewater applications.
  • It is battery-powered, offering minimal human intervention.

“We are pleased to be the first to provide this specialized type of solution for cathodic protection remote monitoring,” said Held. “As with all FreeWave wireless data radios, the battery-powered solution provides flexibility, reliability, long range and low power consumption that our customers have grown to expect in our products.”

Building the Ideal Communication Network – REMOTE magazine article from FreeWave Technologies

Building the Ideal Communication Network

There are many challenges that you will encounter when piecing together the ideal communication network. While many would have you believe that you can easily accomplish your communication goals with a single product, just remember one thing, you can’t! Historically many mistakes have been made due to lack of planning, insuffi cient research and of course the mother of all mistakes, poor decisionmaking. It is human nature to want to trust our colleagues, our neighbors, the nice sales person from the company you just learned about, or the reliable representative you’ve known for years. The fi rst piece of advice is you will take the fall for a bad decision. If you keep in mind the consequences of making a bad decision you are on the right track to creating the ideal communication network.

Steps for Success

As with achieving any goal you must understand where they want to end up. If you want to end up with a communication network that doesn’t meet your needs today or in the future then all you need to do is buy a few communication devices for a low price, install them in the fi eld and let the good times roll. However, if you want to build a communication network that meets both your current needs and your long-term goals, then take the time to build a communications strategy complete with tactics and measurable objectives. The intent of this article is to outline good processes and provide steps to assist you in deploying a communication network that can meet your objectives and needs for many years to come.

WHAT: ”Using Wireless Networking and Remote Sensor Monitoring in Pivot Irrigation”

As technology is becoming more affordable to both private and corporate farms, the use of telemetry technologies not only is creating value to businesses but being utilized in new ways. The latest telemetry trend is “wireless instrumentation” or the ability to control or monitor analog and digital signals without the constraints of wire. These signals may be used to communicate to and from the pivot to the farm to check moisture and temperature sensors, chemical soil samples, wind speed for the best time to water, and the actual pivot location and pump power usage. This capability, together with Internet access, allows the entire pivot system to be viewed anytime via a smart telephone. Steele will review how to efficiently and affordably track data for pivot irrigation farms, as well as weigh the pros and cons of newer versus traditional systems of operation.

FREEWAVE TECHNOLOGIES EXPERT TO DISCUSS WIRELESS 101 AT CLAGTEE CONFERENCE IN BRAZIL

WHO:  Elroy Rosado
Business Development Manager, Latin America
FreeWave Technologies
(www.freewave.com)

Rosado manages business development efforts for Latin American markets at FreeWave Technologies. He has more than 10 years of senior leadership and management experience in manufacturing environments growing sales, developing distribution channels and managing business development efforts for manufacturers of high-technology-engineered products.

Founded in 1993, FreeWave Technologies is a world leader in the innovative design and manufacture of license-free spread spectrum and licensed band radios and wireless data solutions that are trusted for mission critical applications around the world. www.freewave.com.

WHAT: Wireless 101: From Remote Site to Desktop with Wireless Connectivity

Fifteen years ago, even the more advanced automation systems seldom supported telemetry. Systems that did employ telemetry offered very slow data throughput and rarely could provide coverage to every automated location, limiting their usefulness. Today, it’s common to have 100 percent communication to all field locations, and to experience data throughput from the field of 19.2 or even 38.4 K baud. High-speed backbone telemetry is now available in the megabits range. Wireless instrumentation is the latest telemetry trend, supporting analog and digital signals without the constraints of a wired connection. Now, it can be used to communicate to and from pressure or temperature transducers, to control valves remotely, to signal the arrival of switch closures, or to report status changes or contact closures. This presentation will explore all of the various options available to companies in selecting their wireless network solutions and offer key considerations when evaluating what solution works best for their environment and application.
