Tasktop and ThoughtWorks Studios extend integration, reporting and visibility across external ALM systems through Mingle® Agile project management platform
VANCOUVER and SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 6, 2012 – Tasktop Technologies (tasktop.com), the leader for Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) integration, and ThoughtWorks Studios, a leading provider in Agile software solutions and training, today announced the Tasktop Sync Mingle Connector for Agile projects and ALM. Tasktop Sync now allows Mingle customers to integrate HP Quality Center, IBM Rational Team Concert, Microsoft Team Foundation Server, Atlassian JIRA and many other software delivery tools using a single platform. The result is improved collaboration among diverse teams and disciplines, and complete visibility, traceability and reporting across a broad range of ALM systems.
“For many organizations ALM tool integration across the whole application lifecycle is needed to offer the best project status visibility and traceability,” said Chad Wathington, managing director for ThoughtWorks Studios. “With the new Tasktop Sync Mingle Connector we now offer integrations to many ALM tools, including the ability to access and manage QA and test, traditional requirements, and defects originating from third-party tools all within Mingle.”
Mingle is ThoughtWorks Studios Agile project management platform that helps teams work better together. Along with the Go™ Continuous Delivery and Twist® Automated Testing tools, it is meant to guide teams on the path towards Continuous Delivery of software. Mingle offers complete visibility into software initiatives and promotes collaboration among business and delivery teams. Organizations use Mingle to remove process hurdles, mitigate risks and easily change course as required to deliver customer value. It adapts to team workflows and allows teams to work in different ways to continuously adapt to changing organizational needs. For ALM, Mingle facilitates organization-wide collaboration, bringing together development teams, project management and business stakeholders in one shared workspace.
Tasktop Sync provides automated server side data integration for visibility and reporting across multiple ALM systems in heterogeneous IT environments. Unlike previous approaches to ALM synchronization, Tasktop Sync is built on the industry-standard Mylyn ALM interoperability framework to provide real-time synchronization, automatic and configurable conflict resolution, and support for connecting many ALM tools from a common platform. Building on Tasktop’s Task Federation™ technology, Tasktop Sync ensures that each stakeholder has access to the data that they need within their tool of choice, even if the data resides in external requirements management, Agile development and quality management systems.
“Mingle is well known for its adaptability to the diverse ways that development teams work,” said Mik Kersten, CEO of Tasktop and creator of the open source Eclipse Mylyn project. “With the new Tasktop Sync support for Mingle, our joint customers can extend all of Mingle’s benefits for Agile project management to their entire software delivery process, ranging from traditional requirements management to testing.”

CHICAGO, Sept., 29, 2011 – ThoughtWorks, Inc. (www.thoughtworks.com) the global leader in enterprise Agile development services, today announced that Jez Humble and David Farley’s book, Continuous Delivery, has been awarded the Jolt Excellence Award, given to the top software development book of the year. Released in 2010, Continuous Delivery is recognized as one of the most important industry books to be published, as enterprises work to extend the benefits of Lean and Agile methods beyond small teams and through the entire development and delivery lifecycle.
“I have reviewed many books as part of my work on the Jolt Awards, but it’s been a very long time since I have read a book as useful and likely game-changing as Continuous Delivery,” said Andrew Binstock, editor-in-chief of Dr. Dobb’s Journal. “I have literally never read a better book on process. I believe that going forward, Continuous Delivery will redefine Agile process and Continuous Integration (CI); and it will have as much influence as Martin Fowler’s book on Refactoring did on code.”
Jolt Awards are given to products, books and web sites that have “Jolted” the industry by helping to create faster, easier and more efficient software. The Awards are judged by a respected panel of Dr. Dobb’s Journal editors, expert advisers and columnists. This year’s judges reviewed 15 titles from an original list of 51 nominations. In addition, Domain-Specific Languages, by ThoughtWorks’ Martin Fowler with Rebecca Parsons, was a Jolt Award finalist. To read the full article highlighting the books that received a Jolt Award, please visit: (http://drdobbs.com/JOLTawards/231500080).

IT clients in North America see near-shore advantages in language, skills and time-zone proximity, while Brazilian development organizations look to scale Agile practices
27 June 2011 – Porto Alegre, Brazil – ThoughtWorks, Inc. (www.thoughtworks.com), the global leader in enterprise Agile development services, today announced two thought leadership events in Brazil featuring Agile expert Jim Highsmith and the continued demand for its Brazil-based software development services from IT organizations in both North and South America. ThoughtWorks’ opened its first office in Brazil in 2009 and has experienced continued growth as the use of “near-shore” IT services based here increases due to a highly skilled talent base, convenient time zone proximity and travel accessibility via overnight flights from the United States.
“As we reach the mid-point of 2011, we are extremely encouraged by the increasing demand for IT services delivered from Brazil and the continued adoption of Agile-based methods within the local software development community,” said Gary DeGregorio, South America market principal for ThoughtWorks. “We are excited to welcome industry luminary Jim Highsmith to Brazil and to have him engage with both practitioners and IT executives during the Agile Brazil 2011 conference and the ThoughtWorks Executive Forum we are co-hosting in Sao Paulo with Locaweb.”
Highsmith will deliver his presentation: Adaptive Leadership: Accelerating Organizational Agility, on June 28 at an invitation-only executive event co-sponsored with Locaweb at the Grand Hyatt Sao Paulo. This inaugural event kicks off an on-going series of ThoughtWorks Executive Technology Briefings designed for Brazilian CIOs, CTOs and IT Directors. To request an invitation to this event please send an email to info-br@thoughtworks.com. Highsmith also will deliver the presentation during a keynote on Wed., June 29 at Agile Brazil 2011 (http://www.agilebrazil.com/2011/en/).
“In 2007, Locaweb started working with Agile methods as a way to adapt faster and more adequately to growing complexity and changes in the market,” said Joaquim Torres, director, product development and product management at Locaweb.” As one of the largest Agile shops in Brazil, we are excited to co-sponsor Jim Highsmith’s presentation in São Paulo. We want to help other companies learn more about Agile from one of the co-authors of the Agile Manifesto and a leader in developing advanced best practices.”
ThoughtWorks, Agile and Brazil
Brazil is one of the few countries that has managed to prosper during the recession, virtually unscathed by the economic downturn that rocked financial markets in 2008. Brazil also is the fifth largest nation with respect to land mass, and has always had a historical presence in the IT industry, with approximately 2 million people currently working in the technology sector. While the cost benefit of near-shoring to Brazil is less than Asia, Brazilian IT costs are still favorable when compared to North America.
With its office located in the TECNOPUC Technology Innovation Park on the campus of Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, ThoughtWorks now employs 100 technologists with an additional 20-40 consultants expected to join the company by the end of 2011. Globally, the firm points to several factors that make Brazil well suited to deliver quality IT services, including a vibrant and growing economy, a commitment to open source software, strong English language skills, outstanding talent and close proximity within the Western Hemisphere. The region also is embracing Agile software methods, with the Brazilian IT community being the leader in South America for adopting and scaling Agile in the enterprise.
“Companies throughout Brazil are looking for better ways to obtain and contract for high-quality IT services, and to build lasting relationships that will solve their problems and add value to the business,” said Dr. Rafael Prikladnicki, professor, researcher and Director of the Technology Management Agency at PUCRS, coach and instructor on Agile Methods and distributed development. “In this scenario, lean and Agile approaches fit quite well and the Brazilian IT industry has learned much from ThoughtWorks as we improve the way we do business, make changes and add value.”
The ThoughtWorks Brazil office is an important part of the firm’s strategic growth plan, which includes continued support for software excellence by expanding its global footprint into economic regions beyond its existing operations in North and South America, Europe, India, China and Australia. Brazil is important due to the country’s wealth of highly skilled information technology workers, its commitment to the advancement of emerging technologies, such as dynamic languages, and its support for the advancement of open source software. The ThoughtWorks Porto Alegre office supports the local market, marrying large enterprise application development capabilities with personalized, small-company service.
“ThoughtWorks has played a significant role in evolving the way we develop and deliver software using Agile methods within a very complex and dynamic environment,” said Ricardo Sazima, head of development for digital products at Editora Abril, South America’s leading publisher with more than 80 dedicated portals. “Continuously improving the customer experience across all of our content websites is critical to our growth and success, and ThoughtWorks has helped us achieve these goals through its professionalism, hard work and experience.”

Five key organizational practices make up Agile ALM
SAN FRANCISCO and LONDON, June 7, 2011 – ThoughtWorks Studios (www.thoughtworks-studios.com), a global leader in enterprise Agile development products and services, today released a new white paper – Agile ALM: Redefining ALM with Five Key Practices. The paper outlines an entirely new and modern approach to Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) that helps IT organizations meet increasing customer expectations and quickly adapt to competitive pressures through the design, development and Continuous Delivery of high quality software.
To download a complimentary copy of the white paper please visit: (http://www.thoughtworks-studios.com/user/register&destination=resource_whitepapers/whitepaper/download/redefining_alm).
“The impact and reach of Agile software methodologies now spans the entire application lifecycle, making the use of traditional ALM tools and processes counter-productive for organizations moving to a more rapid and incremental build, test and release cycle,” said Cyndi Mitchell, managing director for ThoughtWorks Studios and co-author of the white paper. “Thispaper draws on the collective experience of both ThoughtWorks and ThoughtWorks Studios to provide five strategic building blocks IT executives can use to bridge Agile principles into ALM.”
While traditional ALM-applied tools enforce pre-defined standardized processes, ThoughtWorks sees Agile ALM as the application of tools to support people and the processes that best suit the way they actually work when creating great software. The white paper outlines five key organizational practices of Agile ALM, and describes how organizations that keep these practices in the forefront of all software delivery activities will reap the benefits in increased agility.
In addition to co-authors Cyndi Mitchell, Chad Wathington and Ethan Teng, ThoughtWorks’ luminariesMartin Fowler, Jim Highsmith and Jez Humble provide an introductory overview into each of the five practices for Agile ALM:
Evolve Process Definition
Agile ALM recognizes that the most effective process for any software initiative cannot be defined up-front; it must be continuously discovered, evolved and refined over time.
Embrace Heterogeneity
Agile ALM embraces the fact that every software project is different. Just as processes cannot be completely defined up-front, they also cannot be completely standardized across all teams.
Build the Right Thing
Organizations that focus on building the right thing over managing the lifecycle of artifacts create software that is more exciting and useful to their end users and customers. Agile ALM embeds customers and business people into the day-to-day activities of software teams.
Practice Continuous Delivery
Agile ALM continuously delivers a few features every couple ofdays or weeks, instead of a bunch of features once a quarter. Practicing Continuous Delivery ensures that the path to production is clear, kinks in the release process are ironed out early and predictability becomes the norm.
Orchestrate, Don’t Manage
Agile ALM calls upon company leaders and managers to become orchestrators by making sure the work being done is aligned with business goals, removing obstacles, fixing bad projects, understanding the portfolio, and helping to spread best-practices across teams.

Industry experts from ThoughtWorks and Forrester Research join senior IT executives to discuss practical approaches to eliminate “the last mile” of Agile ALM
CHICAGO AND LONDON, May 18, 2011 – ThoughtWorks (www.thoughtworks.com), the global leader in enterprise Agile development services, and its product division, ThoughtWorks Studios, today announced the opening of ThoughtWorks Live, a two-day, invitation-only event focused on how IT organizations can implement Continuous Delivery and emerging DevOps practices to enable rapid, incremental delivery of high-value software. ThoughtWorks luminaries, including Martin Fowler, Jez Humble and Cyndi Mitchell, will join Forrester Research’s Dave West and senior IT executives from Expedia and Statoil, to present experience-based information that will help attendees extend the value of Agile methods throughout the entire application delivery lifecycle.
“ThoughtWorks helped pioneer many of today’s best practices for Agile development and the ThoughtWorks Live event will highlight how Continuous Delivery and DevOps are helping IT organizations deliver software value faster and with more predictability,” said Mitchell, managing director of ThoughtWorks Studios and the host of the event. “Continuous Delivery provides the organizational principles and practices to enable businesses to keep software production-ready throughout the application lifecycle, so it can be released on-demand with a single click.”
As outlined in Jez Humble’s ground-breaking book, Continuous Delivery, getting software released to users is often a painful, risky and time-consuming process. Through automation of the build, deployment and testing process – and improved collaboration between developers, testers and operations – delivery teams can get new software released in a matter of hours, sometimes even minutes, no matter the project size or the complexity of the code base. Continuous Delivery helps IT leaders break down the silos that segregate business, development, testing and operations, to create a culture of collaboration, agility and discovery across the entire IT organization.
The ThoughtWorks Live conferences allow business and IT leaders to discuss and share experiences around the latest trends in the software industry. This event, focused on Continuous Delivery and DevOps, includes the following presentations:
ThoughtWorks and ThoughtWorks Studios continue to help enterprise IT organizations reap the full benefit of Agile development methodologies. ThoughtWorks offers dedicated development and consulting services, including Continuous Delivery, to a global customer base of software-driven organizations. ThoughtWorks Studios provides a complete suite of Agile ALM solutions, including Mingle (Agile project management), Twist (Agile test automation) and Go, its release management platform that automates the “last mile” of the Agile ALM process and enables Continuous Delivery by facilitating collaboration between developers, testers and IT operations.
ThoughtWorks Studios also today unveiled a new version of its GoTM Agile release management product that enables Continuous Delivery. Go 2.2 includes complete end-to-end ALM traceability – from deployments all the way back to source code and requirements – through an advanced integration with the Mingle project management solution. This provides the ability to generate release notes automatically, and see which stories have been completed between builds or deployments. Go 2.2 also provides a state of-the-art configuration interface for managing large and distributed installations. Also, the free Go Community Edition no longer requires a license so teams can now download, install and get up and running in seconds.

“Remediation Patterns – How to Achieve Low Risk Releases” – May 11, 2011 – 10:35 a.m. – 11:35 a.m. (Jez Humble)
Deployments gone bad are a leading cause of developers spending their evening or weekend hunched over a terminal instead of outdoors having fun. Humble presents a number of patterns that reduce the risk of releases, including techniques for zero-downtime releases, roll-backs and roll forwards. He also discusses how to build reliable releases into the delivery process using automated provisioning, deployment and smoke testing.
“DevOps Counseling: 10 ways to help your Dev and Ops people resolve their differences and learn to love each other again” – May 11, 2011 – 14:05 p.m. – 15:05 p.m. (Tom Sulston)
One of the practices encouraged by DevOps is the creation of cross-functional delivery teams that contain all of the skills necessary to bring software from concept to production. In the enterprise, unfortunately, development and operations teams have historically been separate groups; each with their own management, reporting, tools, and practices. Bringing these teams closer together involves a clash of cultures & values that can be both disheartening and unhelpful. In this session, I propose my top ten tips for helping development and operations people overcome their differences and start truly collaborating on the practices necessary to create and run great software.
