THOUGHTWORKS STUDIOS RELEASES NEW VERSION OF TWIST FOR IMPROVED AUTOMATED AGILE TESTING

Twist evolves to maintain functional test suites for increasingly complex test applications

SAN FRANCISCO, April 7, 2011 – ThoughtWorks Studios (www.thoughtworks-studios.com), a global leader in enterprise Agile development products and services, today announced the latest version of Twist, the company’s automated test solution. New features help development teams release quality software faster through improved support for larger and more complex test suites, and new feedback capabilities that allow teams to build test suites in conjunction with Twist’s refactoring support.

“A key component to a successful Agile ALM strategy is tool support that maintains robust automated regression suites. To that end, analyzing test suites to find duplication and opportunities for improvement is a significant step forward in making the evolution of those test suites easier,” said Chad Wathington, vice president, product development for ThoughtWorks Studios. “Twist’s inherent ease-of-use and new features make it an ideal component for IT organizations looking to expand the scope of Agile beyond small teams and avoid the traditional limitations of manual testing.”

Twist provides an intuitive user experience to create highly robust and reusable test automation frameworks for both manual and functional automated tests. Along with Mingle (Agile project management) and Go (Agile release management), Twist is an integral part of ThoughtWorks Studios’ Agile ALM solution. It provides continuous visibility into testing activities across distributed projects and teams, and supports enterprise Agile projects by combining requirements and test specification managementand creation. Twist provides a reusable, multi-platform testing capability that ensures testing keeps pace with application development through increased visibility and feedback of Agile testing activities throughout the application lifecycle.

“Twist enabled the business to deliver a higher quality product,” said Stuart Taylor, delivery manager for AutoTrader.co.uk, the United Kingdom’s number one automotive website. “Fewer production defects reduced operation costs. Increased confidence in the product’s quality has allowed a higher frequency release schedule that delivers larger pieces of functionality.”

New features in Twist 2.2 include:

  • Scenario Analyzer: users can now analyze test suites and identify patterns of test steps that are repeatedly used within a test suite. They can use the existing “extract concept” and “push to implementation” refactoring features to simplify the structure of the test suite.
  • Saved Filters: users can now organize tests by saving tag combinations: users can more efficiently manage test suites through improved navigation when reading and maintaining tests.
  • Record Multiple Steps: users can now record multiple test steps sequentially in the same recording session, allowing for faster recording while ensuring that tests are recorded at an atomic level, making them easier to maintain than traditional record and playback tools.
  • Additional features of Twist 2.2 include:
    • Improved usability when creating and maintaining workflow fixtures.
    • Auto-complete now available for parameters.
    • Visual reporting for contexts.
    • Word wrap in scenario editor.
    • Concepts now show contextual data.
    • Improved usability for refactoring features.

With Twist teams now have the ability to evolve maintainable functional test suites to test complex applications, with tests that are written in the language of business, not code. It is commonly used as a bridge from manual to automated functional testing, and to support the maintenance of large complex test suites.

THOUGHTWORKS STUDIOS’ MINGLE 3.3 SUPPORTS ENTERPRISE AGILE AND REAL-TIME RELEASE MANAGEMENT

THOUGHTWORKS STUDIOS’ MINGLE 3.3 SUPPORTS ENTERPRISE AGILE AND REAL-TIME RELEASE MANAGEMENT

Mingle addresses the hybrid nature of Agile implementations and extends governance and real-time visibility into the health of software deployments

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 27, 2011 – ThoughtWorks Studios (www.thoughtworks-studios.com), a global leader in enterprise Agile development products and services, today announced the latest version of Mingle®, its flagship Agile project management platform. New capabilities give enterprises enhanced access control and user management to better manage and organize users and project workflows. Mingle also has new integrations with the company’s Agile release management product, GoTM,  for Continuous Delivery, and the Git version control system. The Go integration provides real-time visibility into software release pipelines and the overall health of software deployments.

Mingle is the Agile project management platform of ThoughtWorks Studios’ Agile ALM suite that includes Twist® (Agile test automation) and GoTM (Agile release management). Mingle’s unique ability to manage any Agile method, from Scrum and Lean to “hybrid-Agile,” allows organizations to develop new, innovative development methods while managing existing, legacy processes, including waterfall. This non-prescriptive, adaptive and open approach addresses the realities of IT application development, where a mix of tools and processes are used across the enterprise. Based on more than a decade of Agile innovation from parent company ThoughtWorks, Mingle provides real-time quality metrics within and across projects, and team collaboration capabilities that bridge the gap between business stakeholders, project managers, program managers, development teams and IT operations.

“Agile is built on the presumption that individual teams will figure out for themselves the many details of how to plan, build, and deliver technology,” said Forrester Research, Inc. in the independent May 5, 2010 report: Tech Vendors Supporting Agile Must Be Adaptive.  “During the course of adoption, teams may perform significant revisions to these details, particularly as they adopt new Agile subdisciplines. Agile tools must be able to support these evolutions.”

New capabilities of Mingle 3.3 focus on extending and enhancing instance and project level integrations and user management capabilities to support larger, more complex enterprise Agile adoption. They include:

ALM integrations: Mingle’s ability to serve as an ALM platform is strengthened with improved integrations with the release management product, Go, providing improved visibility into the health of software builds. Now, cross-functional teams can have a real-time, live view of Go pipelines within all Mingle cards and pages. In addition, the latest version of Mingle includes new integration support for the Git version control system.

Enterprise-grade access control and permissions: Mingle fully supports project user groups and permissions for improved project workflow management. It helps standardize user groups and improves conformance and governance by extending organization and department specific user group definitions and process workflow structures to Mingle projects.

Improved user administration and management: For larger enterprise deployments, Mingle provides instance-level views that allow administrators to manage both user membership and project permissions for multiple projects at once. It simplifies user management with a new, improved view at the project level that enables user group management and bulk removal of users from a project.

“As Agile development reaches deeper within IT organizations it is increasingly important to efficiently manage, organize and visualize information across the entire development and release process,” said Cyndi Mitchell, managing director for ThoughtWorks Studios. “The latest version of Mingle addresses what our customers are asking for – easy to use, integrated software – allowing them to spend less time in the tool and more time building software.”

Mingle 3.3 is available for download now. For more information please visit: (http://www.thoughtworks-studios.com/mingle-agile-project-management).

THOUGHTWORKS STUDIOS ANNOUNCES ‘GO’ TO ENABLE BREAKTHROUGH AGILE APPROACH OF CONTINUOUS DELIVERY

THOUGHTWORKS STUDIOS ANNOUNCES ‘GO’ TO ENABLE BREAKTHROUGH AGILE APPROACH OF CONTINUOUS DELIVERY

Based on new wave of Agile practices from ThoughtWorks, Go enables organizations to overcome operational constraints to schedule releases according to business needs

SAN FRANCISCO and BANGALORE, July 20, 2010 – ThoughtWorks Studios www.thoughtworks-studios.com, a global leader in Agile ALM solutions, today announced GoTM, a new Agile release management platform that allows organizations to incrementally automate the entire build, test and deployment process and release software faster and more reliably. Go enables Continuous Delivery, making it possible for enterprises to move from a world where software releases are governed by operational constraints to a world where they can release according to their business needs. Pioneered by ThoughtWorks as a key element of large-scale Agile adoption, Continuous Delivery combines automation and engineering rigor with a heavy emphasis on collaboration to break down the prevalent organizational silos that segregate development, QA and IT operations.

“For many enterprises, software increasingly plays a critical role in creating a competitive advantage and building and maintaining value-added customer relationships. As an industry, Agile practices have had a major impact on our ability to create software faster to keep pace with business needs,” said Cyndi Mitchell, managing director of ThoughtWorks Studios. “But many organizations still spend several weeks, and often months, putting software live in production – long after it’s been declared ‘ready’ by the business. As Agile and ALM come together, Continuous Delivery and Go enable a next-generation Agile approach that delivers rapid and reliable releases as and when the business needs them.”

Go is the upgrade path for ThoughtWorks Studios’ continuous integration solution, Cruise. It joins Mingle (Agile project management) and Twist (Agile testing) to form ThoughtWorks Studios Adaptive ALMTM, the only holistic end-to-end solution built from the ground up to serve as a single platform for all aspects of the Agile software development and delivery lifecycle. It integrates requirements analysis, project and program management, test automation, quality assurance, and build and release management to achieve Continuous Delivery. Adaptive ALM is designed to be flexible to adapt to unique customer requirements while providing the structure needed to adopt Agile enterprise-wide and throughout the entire application delivery lifecycle.

As outlined in the upcoming book, Continuous Delivery (Addison-Wesley, Martin Fowler Signature Series, Jez Humble and Dave Farley), delivering software to users can be a painful, risky and time-consuming process. Continuous Delivery outlines the principles and technical practices that enable rapid, incremental delivery of high quality, valuable new functionality through the automation of the build, deployment and testing process. As a build and release principal for ThoughtWorks Studios, and product manager for Go, Humble has guided the technical vision behind Go to ensure it enables Continuous Delivery and fosters an environment where ideas can be turned into released software rapidly, regardless of the size or complexity of the project.

Go helps drive Continuous Delivery by providing organizations with a standard platform to automate, manage and control the entire build, deploy and release processes. It is a single system of record for managing and tracing each application’s lifecycle from check-in to release, thus providing visibility into the production readiness of the entire software portfolio. The result is automated releases that are rapid and reliable and can be self-serviced at the push of a button.

Unique features of Go that enable Continuous Delivery include:

  • Environments: this first-of-its-kind capability lets organizations see what version of each application is in each environment, audit back to the source, and perform one-click deployments of any version of software.
  • Parallel Test Intelligence: speeds up tests by running them in parallel on a grid. Go’s unique test intelligence lets organizations see exactly which tests broke, which check-in broke them, and who was responsible, even when they are run across a grid.
  • New UI for the DevOps world: enables easy centralized management of large numbers of projects and machines for both developers and IT operations.
  • Templates: allows for managing large numbers of projects within an Agile ALM environment. Templates allow organizations to manage branches and define re-usable workflow.

“Go uniquely addresses the needs of development and IT operations teams to have a common, integrated platform to manage their entire development, testing and release lifecycle,” explained Humble, product manager of Go. “Go fills a crucial gap in many Agile implementations – providing the automation, collaboration and compliance capabilities to break down operational silos and turn software releases into frequent, reliable, non-events.”

Go Availability
Go is available now as part of the Adaptive ALM platform from ThoughtWorks Studios. The Go Community edition is available as a free download directly from the ThoughtWorks Studios website, while the full-version, commercial Go Enterprise is available via license. For product, download and pricing information please visit: (www.thoughtworks-studios.com/go-agile-release-management).

THOUGHTWORKS STUDIOS’ NEW TWIST 2.0 PROVIDES COLLABORATIVE AGILE TEST MANAGEMENT

Latest update to Adaptive ALMTM suite drives productivity of QA, developers and business analysts, reduces development rework while keeping pace with rapid Agile releases

SAN FRANCISCO and BANGALORE, March 1, 2010 – ThoughtWorks Studios, (www.thoughtworks-studios.com) a global leader in Agile ALM and training, today announced the latest version of its Agile test automation solutions, Twist® 2.0. Designed to manage the rapid pace of software testing within Agile environments, Twist 2.0 helps testers, developers and business analysts work together to ensure testing is highly efficient and collaborative, resulting in faster release cycles of quality applications.

“It’s very common for people involved in software testing to spend more time trying to keep their automated tests in synch with development rather than actually testing applications,” said Cyndi Mitchell, managing director, for ThoughtWorks Studios. “Twist provides a framework for test automation and test-driven development that allows all stakeholders to build test suites and scenarios using plain English, thereby mitigating the complexity of traditional test automation.”

Twist offers simplicity and an intuitive user experience to create highly robust and reusable test automation frameworks for both manual and functional automated tests. An integral part of ThoughtWorks Studios’ Adaptive ALM solution, Twist provides continuous visibility into testing activities across distributed projects and teams.

Unlike traditional test tools, Twist uses Behavior Driven Development (BDD) and Domain Specific Language (DSL) to allow test automation specialists, developers and business analysts to work collaboratively as a means of ensuring testing efforts match the exact, intended functionality of new applications. This unique approach of using the English language to build test scripts expands the testing process to the “business side” of software development, reducing development re-work and faulty software that does not meet strategic business goals. Twist allows teams to adjust and/or react to change effectively through an open and flexible framework conducive to testing within short sprints or iterations. Ultimately, it allows the testing effort to keep pace with the increasingly rapid rate of application delivery.

New features in Twist 2.0 include:

  • Hybrid Test Execution – allows for manual and automated test steps within the same scenario. This improves collaboration and execution efficiency of both automated and manual testing efforts.
  • Improved Workflow Reuse – provides high level test scenarios and steps (manual and automated) that can be reused and shared within and across multiple projects.
  • Groovy Scripting – supports the Groovy dynamic Agile language for Java. It makes modern programming features available to Twist users with almost zero learning curve.
  • Additional Web Driver support for Sahi – testers have the option of using Sahi or Selenium for Web testing. The benefit of using Sahi is that it abstracts out most difficulties that testers face while automating Web applications.
  • SWTBOT support – allows Twist users to test Java SWT-based applications
  • Data Driven Scenarios – build data-driven tests on the fly for increased test coverage

ThoughtWorks Studios is the products division of the industry leading Agile consultancy ThoughtWorks®. Its Adaptive ALMTM solution includes Mingle® (project management), Twist® (test automation) and Cruise® (release management), to manage all aspects of the software development and delivery lifecycle – from requirements definition and portfolio management to test automation, quality assurance and release management.

Twist supports Agile ALM by combining requirements and test specification management and creation, and by providing manual and test automation to ensure quality throughout the application lifecycle. It plays a significant role in ThoughtWorks Studios’ Adaptive ALM by providing a robust, reusable, multi-platform testing capability that ensures testing keeps pace with application development. Twist increases visibility and awareness of Agile testing activities by providing test results for processes managed by Mingle and Cruise. Together with Mingle, it connects directly to Mingle repositories and links story cards directly to Twist test scenarios. This provides full traceability of test and requirements coverage. When integrated with Cruise, Twist can export all of the necessary libraries to run test scenarios and suites. This allows tests to be run as part of a build (with reports of test results).

THOUGHTWORKS STUDIOS INTRODUCES ADAPTIVE ALM™ FOR AGILE APPLICATION LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT

Integration of industry leading tools delivers flexibility, automation and best-practices to better manage change while increasing the visibility of software development programs

SAN FRANCISCO AND BANGALORE, August 17, 2009 – ThoughtWorks Studios, (www.thoughtworks-studios.com) a global leader in Agile application lifecycle management (ALM) and software development tools, today announced Adaptive ALMTM, a new solution to help organizations streamline and automate the entire Agile software development lifecycle. Using Adaptive ALM, development organizations realize new levels of visibility and flexibility to better manage a wide range of software development methodologies and incorporate engineering best practices that drive productivity and quality.

“Many traditional ‘ALM’ tools focus on project management and require end-users to adhere to the dynamics of the tool, rather than the tool adapting to an organization’s processes and practices,” said Cyndi Mitchell, managing director for ThoughtWorks Studios. “Adaptive ALM allows teams to use their chosen development methods, while supporting engineering best practices that are vital to the successful development of sophisticated and mission-critical software projects.”

ThoughtWorks Studios, the products division of the industry leading Agile consultancy ThoughtWorks®, developed Adaptive ALM through the integration of its three flagship products, Mingle® (project management), Twist® (test automation) and Cruise® (release management). The result is a fully automated solution that supports all aspects of a software development and delivery lifecycle, from requirements definition and portfolio management to test automation, quality assurance and release management.

ThoughtWorks Studios development tools are currently used by hundreds of customers in more than 20 countries. Using Mingle as the management hub for globally distributed and cross functional teams, Adaptive ALM delivers the following benefits for Agile-based development:

• Stakeholder Visibility – provides both management and development teams with real-time visibility across the development lifecycle to more accurately manage and adapt to changing environments.

• Requirements Management – supports greater efficiency and timely capture, management, prioritization and tracking of business objectives. Helps teams at every point in the development lifecycle build to exact customer specifications.

• Traceability and Accountability – allows teams to track business value throughout the development lifecycle through detailed project history at the story level, shared virtual project wall, auditable deployments and traceable story transitions.

• Quality Management – manages quality driven software development from requirements gathering to development and release. Enables business requirements to serve as test specifications and provide automation of test suites and routine test deployments.

• Test Automation and Deployment Management – provides team control and visibility into test and release processes, with fully automated test suites that evolve with the application. This cross-functional automation improves collaboration and quality-driven deployments, ensuring the delivery of high-quality software with intended business value.

ALM with Agility
Based on more than 16 years of experience building and delivering some of the world’s most successful and sophisticated Agile implementations, all ThoughtWorks Studios software is designed to adapt to customer dynamics and characteristics. This flexible, “work as you like” approach to building out a complete ALM program promotes the use of both new and existing processes and best practices across the enterprise. The solution provides developers and business team members with a holistic set of tools that work in harmony to deliver real-time collaboration and visibility. It helps remove operational silos and, through cross-functional automation, effectively meet strategic business objectives regardless of changing parameters.

“Our experience shows us that ‘Agile-in-a-box’ products, and focusing primarily on project management practices alone, does not guarantee Agile success,” says Mitchell. “Adaptive ALM helps manage change and improves certainty of business outcome through collaboration and engineering best practices, like continuous integration, automated testing and refactoring, to help our customers minimize defects, eliminate waste, improve responsiveness and, ultimately, release better software faster.”
