FreeWave to speak, exhibit and showcase its latest technologies for smart grid and utilities at annual conference
SAN ANTONIO, DISTRIBUTECH (Booth # 247) Jan. 24, 2012 – FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, will showcase its technologies for a variety of communication applications in the Smart Grid at DistribuTECH Conference and Exposition (http://www.distributech.com/index.html). Smart Grid applications that FreeWave solutions enable include transformer monitoring, AMI backhaul, substation automation, demand response, capacitor bank control monitoring, fault detection and isolation, Volt / VAR optimization and distribution automation. FreeWave, one of the conference’s car giveaway sponsors and exhibitors, will have several of its products on display and available for demonstration at booth 247. Additionally, FreeWave expert, Dan Steele will present, “Addressing the Water Utility SCADA Network Problem: What’s In Your Radio Communication Tool Box?” in the water utility track on January 25 at 1:30 p.m. CST.
“We have hit the ground running with our efforts in the Smart Grid and utility markets for 2012,” said Ashish Sharma, chief marketing officer at FreeWave Technologies. “DistribuTECH is a great opportunity to showcase the technologies we can offer customers in these markets. What separates us from more traditional wired communication solutions is a significant cost saving in both installation and over the lifetime of use, while maintaining secure and dependable data transmission. Wireless is becoming recognized as a sustainable option for Smart Grid applications in particular, and FreeWave’s radios have a legacy of offering the greatest reliability and flexibility in the industry.”
FreeWave’s industrial radios are trusted by top government and defense contractors to operate in extremely remote locations with high RF noise, making them a viable option for many Smart Grid applications, such as transformer monitoring. By monitoring critical data, including pressure, temperature and oil levels on a real-time basis, a utility is better equipped to mitigate transformer issues before failure. With an effective system in place, a utility can dramatically decrease the incidents that cause power outages, costly damages and dangerous explosions. The ability to automate and monitor key processes in the Smart Grid helps ensure efficient and effective delivery of power, while offering a cost-effective solution to the utilities.
Please be sure to visit FreeWave’s booth (#247) to learn more about its latest technologies in the Smart Grid and for a chance to enter the DistribuTECH car giveaway. FreeWave will have several product lines on display, including the FGR2-PE, FGR2, I/O Expansion, LRS 455, MM2 and HT Plus series of radios. Also, if you would like to learn more about industrial radios within the water industry, please be sure to attend Dan Steele’s presentation on Wednesday, Jan. 25 in Room 215.
“At DistribuTECH, we will share our excitement about FreeWave’s latest technology developments for the Smart Grid and other utilities,” said Sharma. “These markets continue to offer many opportunities for wireless data radios. Our ability to automate a variety of applications contributes to our focus on establishing FreeWave as a top communication solution in the Smart Grid.”

Newest family of radios offers customers next generation of its popular FGR Series with the same proven performance and reliability at lower cost
ENTELEC 2009 Booth # 520, April 27, 2009 – FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, today announced the FGR2 900 MHz Industrial Radio at ENTELEC 2009. FreeWave is featuring the FGR2 family at the conference with the demonstration entitled: “Listen to the FreeWave Difference” to show how the FGR2 provides superior noise filtering and interference handling.
The new product offers customers the next generation of the company’s popular FGR Series with the same high performance and reliability at a lower cost. Once again, FreeWave proves its commitment to customer success by providing the FGR2 that is fully backwards-compatible with the earlier FGR Series of radios and is capable of accurately transmitting data up to 60 miles with the lowest power consumption in the industry.
“Many of our customers have requested a high performance, 900 MHz radio that provides superior features, such as outstanding noise filtering and low power consumption while preserving existing investments by providing backwards compatibility to earlier models that are still going strong in the field,” explained Colin Lippincott, director of marketing at FreeWave. “The FRG2 illustrates our unrelenting commitment to customer satisfaction and to developing innovative radio technologies that lead the market.”
The FGR2 is offered as both a board level product and in an enclosure. It features a 6 to 30 VDC operating voltage, multiple interface options and a temperature range from -40 degrees Celsius to +75 degrees Celsius. The FGR2 continues the tradition of allowing FreeWave customers to incorporate wireless communications into a wide variety of applications, including oil and gas, utilities, golf carts, water systems and more.
Additional features of the FGR2 900 MHz Industrial Radio include:
• Improved low signal performance – RISC-based signal demodulation with matched filter.
• Long range – 60 mile range with clear line of sight and the ability to extend that through store and forward repeaters.
• Versatile – a single radio can operate as a master, slave, repeater or slave/repeater.
• UL Class 1, Division 2 approved.
• Unparalleled signal performance – technology built in for filtering that has unmatched combination of overload immunity and sensitivity.
• Selectable speeds – 115.2 kbps and 153.6 kbps.
• Secure – proprietary spread spectrum technology prevents detection and unauthorized access; 256 bit AES encryption available.
• Industry-leading, money-saving low power consumption.
• Backward compatable with FGR & DGR Series FreeWave radios
• Supported by FreeWave’s new network diagnostics and radio configuration software called FreeWave Tools Suite.
The FGR2 is available for immediate shipment. Additional information, including detailed specifications, is available online at http://www.freewave.com/files/datasheets/FGR2%202.25.09.pdf or by contacting the company at 800-548-5616.
