Wireless networking and remote sensor monitoring are significantly improving the way irrigation data is collected and managed.

As the automation of both private and corporate farms is embraced, we see the use of sophisticated pivot irrigation systems and smart agriculture practices due to new technologies. The human imagination continues to create new ways to use this technology and push those technology providers for more powerful tools.

Ten to 15 years ago, even the most advanced automated pivot systems seldom used telemetry. If they did, the data throughput was extremely slow and seldom provided coverage to all the pivot irrigation sites. Some of the wireless technology also was expensive. Therefore, the telemetry technology was difficult to use effectively because only some sites could be remotely monitored or where farms were paying by the data byte or monthly usage fees to the technology provider.

With many new telemetry technologies available today, it is common to have 100% communication to all farm pivot locations and see data throughput from pivot sites of 19.2 kbps up to 115.2 kbps. High speed backbone telemetry is available with both serial and Ethernet connectivity with speeds ranging close to a megabit per second. Hybrid wireless systems can be utilized where needed to combine different wireless technologies over large geographic areas or remote locations. This can include both cellular, satellite and microwave products that can be deployed for remote areas, or if a higher speed backhaul of data is required.

Additionally, he served as Vice President of Programs for the Boston Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers from 2000-2001. WHAT: Keynote Presentation: Lean Operations: Control the Cost and Pricing of Water While Improving Efficiency

Today, the water/wastewater industry faces many challenges. Budgets are tight and regulations are constantly changing. More than 60 percent of the workforce is expected to retire in the next four years, meaning decades of knowledge retention will need to be passed on to the next generation of water/wastewater operators. Additionally, not only are we seeing the need for more and more data collection, but also analysis of critical data, which has led to information overload. With all of these challenges taken into consideration, data collection needs to be simplified.

By applying a lean approach to water operations, the water/wastewater industry may have the solution it needs to streamline processes while cutting costs. "Lean" is a concept that applies to every business and process. Essentially, it is a methodology to help deal with constant change. For the water/wastewater industry, going lean means automating processes, utilizing technology and ultimately, optimizing the business. This presentation will discuss four steps for implementing lean operations. Additionally, Scholpp will discuss how deployment of software programs, such as Hach Water Information Management Solution (WIMS) software can enable a lean facility.

WHAT: Technical Session: "What's In Your Radio Communication Tackle Box?"

Numerous communication technologies have been introduced into the irrigation and water management market over the years all claiming to be the best and most reliable communication tool. Radios have become faster, smarter and easier than ever to program and upgrade firmware. The biggest advancements are happening on the I/O side of the pond. We see more options and frequencies that can be used today than ever before. Some of those trends are 2.4 GHz for short range I/O and 900MHz for long range or for those networks that might only have a couple of sites that require I/O.

This presentation will review what tools attendees should have in their communication tackle box and how they can make managing their radio communications network easier with more information at their disposal. Tips will be shared for determining what is best for each situation as well as how to plan for organizations' changing needs.

New models of FreeWave's popular IO Expansion line provide additional IO to any serial network

BOULDER, Colo., April 5, 2010 -- FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, today announced three additional models with several new and improved features to its IO Expansion family. The new additions make it easier for customers to leverage their existing hardware investments with significant performance improvements. The FreeWave IO Expansion family is especially well-suited for applications in the water purification, wastewater treatment, oil and gas automation, agriculture irrigation, monitoring and control markets.

"We created our IO Expansion series to meet the needs of customers who want more IO, but don't want to have to purchase a new system to get the additional IO points," explained Ken Granader, vice president of sales at FreeWave. "Based on customer feedback, we've continued developing new models with enhancements that make IO Expansion available for a wider range of applications and compatible with more radios."

The IO Expansion Module is known for offering a scalable IO solution with up to 12 IO points per module. This adds significant flexibility to an existing FreeWave Modbus IO network. Now, with the introduction of the Serial Base, expandable IO points can be added to any existing serial network regardless of manufacturer. Along with the peace of mind that goes with 100 percent temperature tested radios, users can rest assured of measurement accuracy. The 0.10 percent accuracy of analog input measurements across the entire operating temperature means that users can be confident in the reported measurements and reduce their process errors.
New models and additional enhancements to FreeWave's IO Expansion family include:
•    Serial Base: IOE-X-4422PC - with this model, local IO can be added to any serial equipment or serial wireless network, such as existing non-FreeWave wireless serial networks and existing PLCs or RTUs. Both solutions allow customers to increase the number of IO points without the expense of upgrading to new communication or control hardware.
•    Radio Base: FGR2-IO-IOE - provides a wireless base for IO Expansion to any new or existing FGR serial network with up to 60 miles with line-of-sight (LOS).
•    Expansion Module: IOE-X-4422-P - offers universally configurable IO expansion to either the Radio Base (FGR2-IO-IOE) or Serial Base (IOEX-4422PC).
