WHAT: "Using Wireless Networking and Remote Sensor Monitoring in Pivot Irrigation"

As technology is becoming more affordable to both private and corporate farms, the use of telemetry technologies not only is creating value to businesses but being utilized in new ways. The latest telemetry trend is "wireless instrumentation" or the ability to control or monitor analog and digital signals without the constraints of wire. These signals may be used to communicate to and from the pivot to the farm to check moisture and temperature sensors, chemical soil samples, wind speed for the best time to water, and the actual pivot location and pump power usage. This capability, together with Internet access, allows the entire pivot system to be viewed anytime via a smart telephone. Steele will review how to efficiently and affordably track data for pivot irrigation farms, as well as weigh the pros and cons of newer versus traditional systems of operation.

New frequencies offer high-performance, low power and small footprint embedded solutions for sensors, UAVs, UGVs and other military, government applications

BOULDER, Colo., Nov. 16, 2009 -- FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, today announced the availability of the latest additions to its MM2 family of high-performance, tiny form factors: the MM2-M13 and the MM2-MU.
The MM2-M13 product line operates in the 1.3 GHz band and the MM2-MU operates in the UHF band at 340 to 400 MHz. The new radios complement FreeWave's earlier MM2 family of products that operate in the 900 MHz band with both serial and Ethernet interfaces. The two newest additions to the MM2 family offer government and military OEMs the ability to tap the MM2's tiny footprint and high-performance for space and weight critical applications, such as sensors, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs).
"The availability of these newest MM2 radios offers our customers even greater operating range, frequencies and interfaces than ever before," said Tim Stevens, product manager of embedded systems for FreeWave Technologies. "Customers expressed a need for a radio that offered all the performance and reliability as our larger form factor radios while also being compatible with their existing deployed systems. The MM2-M13 and MM2-MU uniquely address these needs today."
The new radios provide the same features and functionality as FreeWave's full-size military/government band radios. The MM2-M13 family of radios is backwards compatible with FreeWave's P Series family of radios and the MM2-MU family is backwards compatible with the company's F series wideband family of radios. This allows customers to replace their existing radios with a much smaller footprint in unmanned vehicles together with a standard size or enclosed radio at the base station or use the same base station with new UAVs. "Backwards compatibility is a key FreeWave hallmark. These FreeWave radios shipped today are compatible within their family of radios that we shipped in the beginning and with every generation since," Stevens explained. "Our customers can use the new radios in aircraft or vehicles without modifying their ground control equipment that currently uses the full size FreeWave radios." Both radios also can fit into small handheld controllers, he added.
With their light weight and small size, the new radios are the ideal communications platform for the control and monitoring of UAVs and UGVs as well as other unmanned vehicles used throughout the world. Other applications include: guided parachutes, sensor networks and many others. Light weight and small size are key factors in allowing UAVs to fly longer missions. Longer missions equate to more intelligence from the UAV - saving lives on the ground.
Features include:
- A full 2 watt (1W for the MM2-M13) transmitter power extends the range of the radio to more than 60 miles.
- Increased operating voltage to 8-30 VDC to provide broader compatibility with various unmanned systems. 5 VDC versions also are available.
- The ability to operate as a slave/repeater further extending network range and coverage.
- Receive sensitivity of - 107 dBm for BER 10-4 extending its range for longer missions and better intelligence.
- RS232/485 or TTL interface is available for easy adaptation to existing and new unmanned systems. Ethernet versions of these radios also are available providing Ethernet connectivity and two RS232 ports.
- 230.4 kbps max throughput for transferring critical data back to ground troops fast.
- 50.8mm (length) X 50.8mm (width) and 21 g (weight).

Availability
FreeWave's new MM2-M13 and MM2-MU radios are available for immediate shipment. Steele will review how to efficiently and affordably track data for? pivot irrigation farms, as well as weigh the pros and cons of newer versus traditional systems of operation.

WHERE: Sheraton City Centre Hotel
150 West 500 South
Salt Lake City, UT
84101

WHEN: Dan Steele: Wednesday, Nov. 4, 3:30 p.m. -5 p.m. at concurrent session IIA- Applications of Technology II

CONTACT: For more information on FreeWave, or to set up an interview with Mr. Steele, please contact Christin Jeffers at Catapult PR-IR (303) 581-7760, ext. 14 or cjeffers@catapultpr-ir.com

pivot irrigation wireless scada precision agriculture

Dan Steele
Business Development Executive
FreeWave Technologies, Inc.

Daniel G. Steele is a business development executive at FreeWave Technologies, Inc. Steele has more than 25 years experience selling SCADA networks for the water and waste water, oil and gas, electric utilities, railroad, traffic and process control instrumentation markets. Some of Dan's previous work experience includes working as a system integrator for three years; branch manager for Water Works Equipment for five years; regional Sales manager for Rockwell Automation for five years; regional area manager for Microwave Data Systems for eight years; and, as senior VP of sales for Bluewave Antenna Systems for two years.

Founded in 1993, FreeWave Technologies is a world leader in the innovative design and manufacture of license-free spread spectrum and licensed band radios and wireless data solutions that are trusted for mission critical applications around the world. www.freewave.com.

WHAT: "Strategic Implementation of Wireless Technologies"
Brent McAdams: Wednesday, Oct. 21, 4 p.m.-5 p.m. in conference Room B

Mr. McAdams will discuss the evolution in wireless technologies and how it has opened the door to a new class of automation architecture that offers adopters a significant strategic advantage.
"Fully Integrated Hybrid Communication Networks"
Dan Steele: Thursday, Oct. 22, 11 a.m. -12 p.m. in conference Room B

Companies with large geographically dispersed remote networks can select one technology, one source, one vendor to collect, retrieve and report data to assess the health of the network. Sometimes, this type of approach makes sense. However, other times integrating other types of technologies offer significant benefits that can easily and more cost-effectively be incorporated into one cohesive network. This presentation will provide attendees with specific ways they can set up and deploy hybrid networks to drive maintenance/monthly costs down - directly impacting their bottom line; decrease polling cycle times; reduce the time needed to identify and rectify problems within the network; and, eliminate single points of failure.

"Wireless Communication to a Plunger Lift Well"
Brent McAdams: Thursday, Oct. 22, 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. in conference Room B

In recent years, artificial lift technologies and processes have become increasingly popular as methods for optimizing oil and gas production. In addition, automation electronics manufacturers have been focusing a great deal of their development efforts on plunger lift control applications. Artificial lift is a process that allows producers to optimize well production while also minimizing overall maintenance and life cycle costs. This presentation will explain the benefits of plunger lift control automation and the newest, best, and most novel control methods that are used.

FreeWave appoints company veteran Colin Lippincott to head up its renewable energy practice

BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 19, 2009 -- FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, today announced it is expanding into the fast-growing solar power generation market. As the leading independent developer and manufacturer of Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) wireless data radio technology, FreeWave has been producing some of the world's most sophisticated wireless data radios for the past 16 years. Its radios are implemented in locations spanning the globe, including "solar friendly" locales, such as the American Southwest, the Middle East, Mexico, China and more. Some of the world's largest energy companies, defense contractors, city and county municipalities and industrial manufacturers rely on FreeWave radios daily for mission critical communications.

In the solar power generation market, FreeWave's industry-leading wireless data radios address a wide range of wireless applications that support monitoring and control for all types of solar power generation models - from solar troughs, dishes, photovoltaic (tracking and stationary) and heliostats. The company's wireless technologies will help solar power generation providers lower their installation and infrastructure costs, while also offering reliable, robust communication performance with dependable, easily installed networks.

"Today's solar power generation companies face several challenges, including the need to easily build an infrastructure capable of accurately monitoring data results and controlling systems in real-time," explained Colin Lippincott, leader of FreeWave's renewable energy practice. "FreeWave's solutions address these factors eliminating solar power generation providers' need to trench and to run fiber or wire This provides them with a strong ROI-based resource that reduces their initial capital investment and long-term maintenance costs while also providing all of the necessary communications. These factors, combined with FreeWave's superior, reliable technology and best-in-class service and support, are key benefits we can offer to solar power generation providers and why we are the preferred choice among OEMs in the energy, military, agriculture markets and more."

A company executive and veteran, Lippincott has been with FreeWave since 2003. He has led the company's sales and marketing efforts since first hired until most recently being appointed to head up its renewable energy efforts.

Lippincott says the solar power generation industry is a perfect fit for FreeWave's wireless data radios. Because the industry is still in its infancy and expected to grow at a fast clip, FreeWave's radios fill an especially critical need as solar power generation networks are being built.
WHAT: Wireless 101: From Remote Site to Desktop with Wireless Connectivity

Fifteen years ago, even the more advanced automation systems seldom supported telemetry. Systems that did employ telemetry offered very slow data throughput and rarely could provide coverage to every automated location, limiting their usefulness. Today, it's common to have 100 percent communication to all field locations, and to experience data throughput from the field of 19.2 or even 38.4 K baud. High-speed backbone telemetry is now available in the megabits range. Wireless instrumentation is the latest telemetry trend, supporting analog and digital signals without the constraints of a wired connection. Now, it can be used to communicate to and from pressure or temperature transducers, to control valves remotely, to signal the arrival of switch closures, or to report status changes or contact closures. This presentation will explore all of the various options available to companies in selecting their wireless network solutions and offer key considerations when evaluating what solution works best for their environment and application.

FreeWave's ongoing success leads to its 30th consecutive bonus payout to employees

BOULDER, Colo. - August 12, 2009 -FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, continues its solid record of growth and investments through the first half of 2009. As has been true for the past 14 years, the company shares its success with its employees through regular, twice-a-year bonus payouts. The most recent, paid on July 23, was the 30th consecutive bonus payment since 1995. Payments are based on company profitability and individual performance.

Despite economic challenges, FreeWave also continues to invest in hiring, new product development and market expansion. For example, FreeWave expects to increase it's year-to-year headcount and is looking to fill several sales and product management positions. In addition, FreeWave has issued a steady stream of new products this year, including the IMCP 2.4 GHz, FGR2 Series; LRS455 Series; Tool Suite; and, most recently, new additions to its industry-leading MM2 radios. The company is expanding into new markets as well, both geographically and vertically.

"We continue to be successful, despite challenging times for many, because of the dedication and hard work of our employees," explained Ken Granader, vice president of sales at FreeWave. "Each and every day our employees give 100 percent plus to our organization, and especially to our customers, who are the reason we continue to thrive."

Just more than four months ago, FreeWave also gave its employees the third installment of a $9 million equity bonus payout. This one-time bonus, part of a $113 million private-equity transaction, was given by Company Founders Steve Wulchin and Jonathan Sawyer to reward their employees for their contributions. This payout was in addition to the ongoing bi-annual bonus payout employees regularly receive.

The bonuses come in the midst of an economy that continues to struggle, with many companies continuing to make major budget cuts - including the elimination of bonus programs. In the eyes of Co-founders Wulchin and Sawyer, however, this program is essential in maintaining FreeWave's leading position in the wireless data radio market. Wulchin and Sawyer always have believed that in order to succeed, they need to make ongoing investments in their employees.

"It's deeply rooted in our philosophy," explained Granader. "Work hard and invest in the things that really matter. To us, that is our customers and employees. To this day, it's never failed us."

New embedded technologies offer military OEMs even greater speed and throughput for mission-critical, life or death situations

AUVSI BOOTH # 109, Wash. D.C., Aug. 10, 2009 -- FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, today announced it has expanded its industry-leading family of MM2 radios with the addition of two high-speed versions: the MM2-HS-T (TTL interface) and MM2-HS-P (Ethernet interface).

FreeWave's MM2-HS-T and MM2-HS-P add high-speed capability and greater throughput to the already great features of its MM2-T which offers selectable speeds of 115.2 to 153.6 Kbps. The MM2-HS-T and the MM2-HS-P are capable of an over-the-air speed of 1.23 Mbps allowing users to send significantly more data in a shorter period of time. The MM2-HS-T is ideal for embedded applications that require high data rates, such as video and long distances in the same mini (2-inch high x 1.4-inch wide) footprint. The MM2-HS-P is slightly larger, but still very compact in size.

"By offering an entire family of MM2 radios, we are giving our customers options to meet their various applications for embedded technology solutions," said Ken Granader, vice president of sales at FreeWave. "We made a high-speed version of the MM2-T because there are many applications within industry, government, and military where it's necessary to transmit large amounts of data, including multiple hi-res images and video along with data."

The entire family of MM2 radios at FreeWave offers a variety of features that cannot be found anywhere else in the market. Key features of the MM2-HS-T and MM2-HS-P include:
*Tiny footprint - the MM2-HS-T offers the same miniature dimensions as the MM2-T (50.8 x 36 x 9.6 millimeters with a weight of 14 grams). The MM2-HS-P comes in the compact dimensions of 101 x 51 x 13 millimeters with a weight of 42 grams.
*Unequalled low signal performance - RISC-based signal demodulation with matched filter. Sensitivity is specified and guaranteed.
*Unparalleled signal performance - the GaAs FET RF front end with multi-stage surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) filters has an unmatched combination of overload immunity and sensitivity. Selectivity is specified and guaranteed.
* Industrial grade high-speed Ethernet (only in the MM2 HS-P) - supports TCP, industrial grade wireless security and serial communications, all in one package.
*Versatile -can be used in a security network as a master, slave, repeater or master/slave unit depending upon its programming.
*High noise immunity - offers superior performance in noise-congested environments.
*Secure - FreeWave's proprietary spread spectrum technology prevents detection and unauthorized access; 256-bit AES encryption available.
*Reliable - 100 percent tested for RF performance from -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius.

WHAT: "The Advantages of Implementing Wireless IO"

This hands-on workshop will show attendees how new spread spectrum technologies give users the ability to connect instrumentation in the field without the need for costly wired infrastructure. Attendees will benefit from this presentation by acquiring the information necessary to make wireless IO business decisions.

"Wireless Communication to a Plunger Lift Well"

Traditionally, an operator was required to manually shut in the well to create pressure downhole in wells that suffered from heavy fluid loads. Artificial lift is a method used to build enough downhole pressure to lift or produce the liquid from the well. With options for communicating plunger lift data to the RTU being wired or wireless, producers have a decision to consider. To support producers' plunger lift control objectives, automation electronics manufacturers have been focusing a great deal of their development efforts on the plunger lift control applications. Today, these technologies can be supported at the site with either wired or wireless solutions. This presentation will discuss wireless as an alternative to wired solutions. It presents some of the capabilities of wireless that are on par with wired and some that are superior. Also presented is a simple set of economic inputs that can be used as guidelines for making the choice between wired and wireless options.

Licensed radio for North America offers greater distance, lower power consumption so customers can acquire critical data in difficult terrain

Boulder, Colo., June 29, 2009 - FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, today announced the availability of the LRS455. The newest licensed radio from FreeWave offers the lowest power consumption, transmission range and receiver sensitivity available in the market. Due to superior RF propagation characteristics (430-470 MHz at 2 watts), the LRS455 is ideal for rugged and heavily treed terrain applications in oil and gas, water/wastewater, electric and municipality markets.

"Customers increasingly need to access critical data from difficult terrains, and the board level and enclosed LRS455 radios provide outstanding performance and versatility to meet this growing demand," said Ken Granader, vice president of sales at FreeWave. "As always, this latest offering blends the highest level of field performance with the lowest power consumption to help customers incorporate wireless communications into a wider variety of applications."

The LRS455 complements FreeWave's industry leading licensed radios, the LRS-760 and LRS-140. It offers a faster data rate and more noise immunity than competitors' offerings and is perfectly suited for long-distance SCADA applications located within rough terrain or heavy tree coverage. The propagation characteristics at 430-470 MHz at 2 watts are significantly better than higher frequencies at 1 watt, making the LRS455 radio ideal for areas with heavy interference. Field tests also show that the LRS455 performs at a four- to five-times greater range than competitive offerings.

The LRS455 provides advanced system and network management capabilities through the recently introduced FreeWave Tool Suite, an integrated software platform for all aspects of radio and network configuration and diagnostics.

Some of the key technical specs of the LRS455 include:

Customizable to user needs - users can select whatever range they wish across the 435-470 MHz spectrum.

High Speed -19200 bps throughput on a 12.5 kHz channel.

Long Range - 70 mile range with clear line of sight and the ability to extend through a repeater.

- High Noise Immunity - Superior performance in noise-congested environments.

The LRS455 is available for immediate shipment and is available in board level or enclosed formats. Additional information, including detailed specifications, is available online at http://www.freewave.com/LRS455 or by contacting the company at 800-548-5616.

Newest frequencies offer ideal platforms for use in sensors, UAVs, UGVs or anywhere small size, light weight and high-performance are critical
BOULDER, Colo., April 8, 2009 - FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), the largest independent provider of high performance spread spectrum and licensed radio products and services, today announced the release of two new additions to its MM2 family of high-performance, tiny form factor radios: the MM2-M13 and the MM2-MU. The MM2-M13 product line operates in the 1.3 GHz band and the MM2-MU operates in the UHF band.
The new products were developed based on customer input. "Our customers told us they were looking for a small form factor radio with the performance of the larger FreeWave radios in the same 1.3 GHz and UHF government frequencies," explained Harold Christopher, product manager for FreeWave's MM2 Systems. "Our customers wanted a radio that was robust and reliable enough to fly the whole mission while being compatible with existing, deployed systems. FreeWave has come through with the introduction of the MM2-M13 and MM2-MU families of 1.3 GHz and UHF radios."
While small in size, the radios provide the same features and functionality as FreeWave's full-size military/government band radios. "Backwards compatibility is a key FreeWave hallmark," Christopher explained.

A full 2 watt (1W for the MM2-M13) transmitter power extends the range of the radio to more than 60 miles.

Increased operating voltage to 8-32 VDC to provide broader compatibility with various unmanned systems. 5 VDC versions also are available.

The ability to operate as a slave/repeater further extending network range and coverage.

Receive sensitivity of - 107 dBm for BER 10-4 extending its range for longer missions and better intelligence.

RS232/485 or TTL interface is available for easy adaptation to existing and new unmanned systems. Ethernet versions of these radios also are available providing Ethernet connectivity and two RS232 ports.

230.4 kbps max throughput for transferring critical data back to ground troops fast.

50.8mm X 50.8mm and 21 g.

WHAT: Radio-based Cathodic Protection Remote Monitoring

Energy and pipeline companies wrestle to control operating costs largely affected by new government regulations, ageing buried metal assets, rising steel prices, expanding pipeline operations, new interference points, HCA encroachment, restrictive land use policies, heightened network security, and an ageing soon-to-retire work force. With operating costs on the rise and seemingly out of control, many CP and Operations Professionals look to past best practices in cost containment through automation. Many companies achieve solid business results through deployment of telemetry and SCADA automation of remote assets and now hope to expand this success to further optimize operations by automating remote cathodic protection systems.

This presentation will provide examples of how new remote cathodic protection systems are helping energy and pipeline companies address the growing issue of the ageing pipeline infrastructure and reduce their costs while optimizing their operations.
