As DevOps Enterprise Summit 2019 comes to a close, the Catapult team heads home after three days of immersive learning and networking in Las Vegas. If you’re not already familiar with the DevOps Enterprise Summit – it is the premier industry conference for business and technology leaders to learn how to develop and deploy software faster and win in the marketplace.
The Catapult team provided PR and social media support for the event for the sixth year in a row. Over the years, we’ve watched the DevOps community learn, grow and evolve – DOES (#DOES19) feels like a front-row seat to that evolution.
The conference was one for the books with powerful sessions, lightning talks, a busy expo hall, book signings featuring IT Revolution authors and so much more. We feel very fortunate to be serving the Agile and DevOps industries for the past 15 years and to be a part of this conference.
DevOps Enterprise Summit in Review
Day one of the DevOps Enterprise summit set the tone for an amazing week of immersive learning and networking. We saw the software narrative continue to shift towards Value Stream Management and how speed is now secondary to “visibility.” We also saw companies shifting towards the “Ops” side of DevOps and focusing on the data-driven analysis that business leaders can use and understand. You can read our blog about Day One here.
The conference was abuzz with snippets and lessons from Gene Kim’s upcoming book, The Unicorn Project. Attendees had a one-of-a-kind opportunity for an advance copy of the book – signed by Gene himself!
Day two brought us another immersive day of learning. We saw innovative leaders present from companies like Google, John Deere, UC Berkeley, and more! Their presentations addressed everything from security automation to the future of DevOps.
The night closed with a signing from the authors at IT Revolution. We spoke with Manuel Pais and Matthew Skelton, co-authors of Team Topologies, about successful team patterns and how to implement them. Dominica DeGrandis, author of Making Work Visible, attended the author signing to discuss time theft and making work visible within a company. The IT Revolution authors mingled with the crowd as well, including Dr. Mik Kersten, Dr. Nicole Forsgren, and Mark Schwartz.
Day three closed the show with a bang. We saw leaders from Comcast, T Mobile, State Farm and more present. They discussed everything from microservices to driving transformation while delivering business value. We saw many leaders discuss how to stay on course in a world full of change. As each day passed, we saw a few trends emerge and a consensus from the community about where DevOps may be headed.
Three DevOps Themes from DOES19
Overall these are the themes we think are going to be increasingly important for business transformation over the next year:
- Upskilling to prepare for emerging roles and technology, like AI.
- Going beyond getting data and actually knowing what to do with it.
- The need for DevOps to reach across the entire organization.
We learned a lot throughout the conference. From Lightning Talks to a busy expo hall, we feel incredibly lucky to be a part of this community. And as we look back at 15 years of service to the industry, we can’t think of a better place to be – surrounded by business and IT leaders who are moving DevOps forward and telling amazing, personal stories of triumphs, challenges and lessons learned.
As always, we’re excited to see how the DevOps community continues to learn from one another and push each other towards new goals and new processes!
